Due to bad weather in the Norwegian mountains, Catrin and I checked out some climbing in Åre, just across the border in Sweden. While not quite the epic ice climbs available in Norway, easy toproping off of trees allowed for a fun day of climbing. We started off on a thin waterfall, finding it climbable as a difficult (for me) but fun mixed climb. Next we practiced our ice technique on a near-by waterfall about 10 meters high, WI3-ish.

Map of where the ice climbing is in Åre. We walked up, but apparently it is also possible to buy a one ride lift ticket and ski right to the climbs.

Fun lines at Åre. Our mixed line is behind the trees.

The next day we had been hoping to climb Kongsvollfossen, but high winds necessitated a change in plans. We ended up climbing Bjølla (WI3+/4) and a steep waterfall (WI5?) next to it. Both climbs can be easily top-roped by climbing around on the left - for the steep line you can easily belay off trees, and for Bjølla an anchor can easily be made at the top using screws.

The ice on the steep line was a bit hard, making for a difficult but fun climb. Bjølla was 50 meters of soft and easy ice for a great finish to a good ice day.

Anton and I returned to Bjølla on March 4th for his first day of water ice climbing. Conditions are still superb, come to Norway and climb!
