This morning I hiked to Les Lacs de Robert, situated in the Chamrousse area of the Belledonne range, the largest and, IMO, coolest looking of the three ranges surrounding Grenoble. This was my first time in the Belledonne, and I'm looking forward to returning. I brought snowshoes, which was fortunate, as the snow was extremely soft and pretty deep in places. There are 4 lakes all very close together in a large bowl beneath some very nice looking mountains. I was sorely tempted to try climbing one of them, Le Grand Sorbier, by a route I spied with my binoculars ascending steep snow and a bit of rock, but ultimately concluded, I think rightly, that the snow was far too soft to warrant the effort and almost certain failure.
I thus decided to treat it as a scouting trip, with plans to return if there's a couple days of cold weather soon.
