Bainbridge Island Winery and Bike Tour

Jackie, Jon, Lisa, Nathan and I braved the hills on Bainbridge Island and were rewarded with countless glasses of delicious local wine.

We began at the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry for a 10:35 sailing. Upon arriving on the island, we warmed up with a ride around the southern end of the island before beginning the wine tours. Our warm-up ride began with some wooded hills, then finished with some beach-side biking with views of Seattle. By 12:30 we arrived at our first stop: Eagle Harbor Winery. The wine-maker here showed us his set-up and barrel room and gave us each a generous helping of his best wines. The next stop was Rolling Bay Winery. We enjoyed some delicious meat and cheeses here that really helped to bring out the flavors of these wines. We also got a sneak-peak at the newest white wine here straight out of the fermenter. Some lunch at the very small town of Rolling Bay and another short ride brought us to Bainbridge Island Vineyards and Winery. This was the largest winery on the island and (as the name implies) was the first one that we came to that grew their own grapes. They also grew their own fruit and had some delicious berry dessert wines. Another very short ride brought us to Perennial Vinters. This winery, like most on the island, is just getting started. The wine-maker here is in the process of growing his own grapes (which one can expect 5 years from planting to drinking the first wine). In the mean time, he is using grapes from vines of another local winery. He was also using raspberries and strawberries to make desert wines. The strawberry wine at 19% (being fortified with 190 proof ethanol) packed a punch. Our next stop was Eleven, with a nice assortment of whites, a rose, reds and dessert wines. The wine-maker here offered us a nice bike discount. As in turned out, he had been a competitive cycler before and the winery name was derived from the smallest clog on the cassette, which is the hardest gear that you use when you are really going for it. With many of the wineries on Bainbridge still yet to make a profit, they are really going all out in their new businesses. Fletcher bay winery was next on our list. We sampled a nice white and two reds here as well as the remainder of their cheese plate (we had worked up quite an appetite by now). It was now 5pm with one more to go, but the wineries were getting ready to close! We raced over to Victor Alexander Winery to find him expecting us (the people at Fletcher Bay kindly called ahead to let him know we were on our way). This was situated on beautiful property, which the wine-maker gave us a small tour of as we sipped his Cabernet. We finished up the trip a stop at an Italian restaurant, where we chugged several of glasses of water before hitting the ferry back to Seattle.

We all thoroughly enjoyed this tour and are hoping that Bainbridge Island becomes a popular wine tasting and biking destination, and even better if the two are combined.

Stats (including our morning extra ride): 29 miles, 2.5 hours of riding, and 7 wineries visited.

Some pics!

The next open weekend for this tour will be memorial day week. Check it out!

This trip involved a lot of climbing, but of a different sort.. hill climbing on bikes, which is definitely an acquired taste. Somehow we got through most of the day on wine alone. Who knew that wine could be such a good energy drink? You won't see me breaking out a wine glass at the start of my next bike race, though.

This was a really fun day and a great way to see Bainbridge and get a ride in.

During this trip we discussed how it'd be nice to bike out to Redhook in Woodinville...

Or the wineries :)
