Hi all,

I just read the discussion about moving/merging forums and I noticed that I haven't actually written a TR for the 'Other TR' section for quite some time, so here goes...

This has been an extremely warm and low-snow winter over here in the Alps. I remember that in the previous winter one could do ski tours in the backcountry from late November to early May. But this year... People were hoping for snow in January and even in February but now it's March and I hear people saying 'That's it. Skies are back in storage. Let the summer come so we can go climbing."

But, of course, there's other stuff to do in winter besides skiing. Some of the more popular climbing routes and ridge traverses that are full of people in the summer months see very few people in winter. With that in mind, Michael and I, after waiting a few weeks for the right conditions (stabil forecast, low avalanche danger), climbed the Jubilaeumsgrat ridge traverse last week. This ridge is one of the best ridge traverses in the Eastern Alps. It connects the Zugspitze with the Alpspitze (near Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the German-Austrian border) with an elevation between 2900m and 2600 m. A few sections of the ridge are protected by steel cables but for the most part it consists of easy but very exposed climbing/scrambling. In the summer the ridge is often done in a day but during winter travel is slower and so we spent a night at a tiny emergency bivy box that sits in the middle of the ridge.

This is an amazing trip, especially in winter: Solitude (we only met 3 other climbers up there), great views, and -- alp-like -- short approaches. This is how one get's to the start of the climb:

- take the gondola to the top of the Zugspitze
- take the elevator to the panorama deck
- hop over the railing
- start climbing

The descent is by another gondola...

and here are some photos:

That is fantastic.
Bivy box? Is that like a bolted platform you sleep on with raised sides so you don't roll off to your death?
