At least once a winter I spy a dry weekend forecast and the coast calls my name. This year it came in February.

After a long week of jamming needles into people's mouths, I followed the rush-hour mob to the Friday evening Bainbridge ferry. Many hours later, I arrived at the Lake Ozette parking lot, the masses long gone. Two cars, freezing temperatures, and a cloudless starry night. The boardwalk was icy and treacherous in places; I almost spilled my beer twice. Broke out of the trees to a moonlit beach. Low tide, booming surf. Paradise.

A few hours later and a stretch into the Budweisers, the tide was coming in and it was hunker-time. Big winter storms had scoured what last time had been broad sandy beaches. I threw my bag down behind a jumble of logs, opting for a little high-tide roulette. Narrowly stayed dry and woke to a pleasant view:

Now I swear the daylight out here lasts at least twenty hours, even in winter. Or maybe it's a trick of the mind, when there's nothing to do all day but watch the tide roll in . . .

It's important to stay well-nourished on a trip like this, waiting long hours for the tide to swing back out.

But the end of the day always arrives. And when low-light and low-tide coincide, it's a hell of a place to be . . .

One could even believe he'd consumed some form of mind-altering substance, such are the sights in every direction . . .

I passed another night on my tiny strip of beach, crammed between the bluffs and the surf-battered logs. After a long morning of low-tide beach wanderings, it was time to turn back for the dark forest, like a bug crawling back under a log after a short spate in the sunshine. But alas, there just wasn't enough beer and ramen to weather the next storm.

Wow, I'm a devoted fan of the Olympic coast myself, but I've never been there that off season. Way to take advantage of the good weather and get the Lake Ozette Triangle to yourself.

Paddle past the breaks and rip some barrels? I know I would have.
