I've been slacklining for years as a way to focus and relax. Just over the last couple months, I've become aware of a group of people who are pushing hard on slacklining as a sport in itself. In particular, the world of longlines (up to 1600 feet!) and highlines is going crazy these days. I decided that I had to check it out.

So when I discovered that there was a highline festival near Sacramento the weekend right before I was taking a climbing trip anyway, I went ahead and changed my flight to take me there first. This would turn out to be one of the best decisions I've made.

The festival was hosted by Jerry from , which incidentally I highly recommend as the best resource around for slacklining these days. The festival was at a house sort of in the boonies 1.5 hours east of Sacramento. After being stranded in Sacramento for 7 hours, I caught a lift to the festival with some other attendees (not too bad considering I had no idea how I was getting there when I bought the plane ticket).

I finally made it to the festival, and pitched my hammock tent:

The next morning, it was time to start learning how to highline. First, you climb the ladder and tie in to the leash:

Then you scootch yourself out a little way so you aren't in danger of hitting the tree:

Now try to get one foot up on the line:

And stand up!

Sometimes you fall down:

And sometimes you take a full whipper:

But sometimes everything comes together:

Walking a line like that is indescribable. I'm slowly accumulating the gear and knowledge to set up my own highlines. If you are seriously interested in learning how to do this, get in touch with me.

Awesome Ben. Looks like a good trip. Very cool that you're getting into highlines. Does this mean we're going to need a new forum section for highline TRs? :D I look forward to seeing more of your reports as you progress.

YES !!!!!!!

Jim has such a clearly brilliant idea !

There should be a forum for discussing Slacklining. There is just so much to share and talk about and learn. I don't slackline; I have tried it, I found it quite difficult. But.... with an added forum for people to share what they know and get together to share each other's slacklines set up in their respective backyards, and to get together to build slacklines in varying locations in Seattle and in the woods..... I might learn.

And the pinnacle of slacklining many would say is highline. I would enthusiastically enjoy accompanying to set up a highline and cheers others on.

Every Friday from 12-2 at the IMA Climbing Center is "Slack Lunch". We set us a 25-30ft slackline across the climbing gym.

Matt, thanks for sharing that.

Who can set up an additional forum for specific discussions on all things related to slack lining???

-do you wrap trees with cardboard
-do you wrap trees with piece of carpet
-wrapping trees is not necessary
-birch and madrone have too fragile a bark to ever be used as anchors
-mature sequoia never need bark protection because of their remarkable strong bark
-pulleys are helpful to develop sufficient tension if rigging a slackline solo
-pulleys are unnecessary and very expensive for slackline rigging
-carabiners are all that is necessary for rigging
-the best rigging never has any metal components at all
-winches are awesome for basic setup because they are so quick and easy!!!!
-2-inch wide webbing is never appropriate
- 2-inch webbing can be great for one-timers that would better enjoy the experience than trying to get them to mount a 1-inch line
-etc
-etc
-etc
