This sunday I and six other people went to Wedgemount Lake in Garibaldi PP.

I figured BC day weekend is a perfect weekend to go to BC. A bunch of friends and I were thinking about doing an overnight trip to Wedgemount, one of my favourite places in BC, and this weekend was a good time for it. From Wedgemount Lake, there are supposed to be several super-enjoyable scrambles and I wanted to maybe go do them. But the chance of a fireworks+lightning storm combo (last year's was much better, though, 'cause there was more lightning!) and the lack of desire to haul heavy backpacks (should I admit this?) combined into downscaling our plans to a daytrip.

The Sea-to-Sky highway is way easier and faster now, so even despite leaving from downtown Vancouver at a leisurely 9, faffing around in the Squamish Extra Foods, etc., we were on trail by 11:30. It was a relief to be somewhere with orange diamonds roughly every 10 metres, and so no chance of getting lost. The trail gains about 1200m in 6k, in two steeper chunks (one in forest, one in the open along a creekbed) with a flat section in between. I swept the entire way both up and down, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed doing it. We were at the lake at 2:30. There is a nice cozy and photogenic hut there, and also tent platforms and maybe about 10 parties camping. Slight cloudiness did not obscure the views of the mountains coming up from the lake, but did make it seem like the lake is sinking into the abyss, which is very cool. We proceeded to walk around, lounge on the "beach", swim for a little bit (so refreshing!), and go to the tip of Wedgemount glacier to gawk at it (and at the people coming down from Wedge itself). We started descending about 5, and made our 10:15 reservation for sushi at Tanpopo in downtown Vancouver with half an hour to spare. Pretty much everyone there had come from the Pride Parade and there was a girl dressed up as Dave Foley at the next table over, which is pretty cool. Any disappointment at not getting to the top of anything was assuaged by guilt-inducingly delicious (and doubly guilt-inducingly endangered) fish. I already want to go back to Wedgemount, though. There is something incredibly aesthetically pleasing about the Lake that makes you want to keep seeing it, and I really want to do the Mt. Weart scramble one of these days.
