Yes, having a small membership fee is great for keeping the rabble out, so to speak. Even climbers can afford $10/year.

So what do we do with the mailing list? Do we attempt to tie it to the BBS? Do we make it members-only (read and/or write) as this year starts? If we're really going to refocus the club to be more concentrated on the UW community, I think we need to decide to either let the mailing list die (allow no new subscriptions and move everything to the BBS) or restrict it (with some advance warning) to members only. The best solution, to me, is to restrict the list and forward certain BBS posts to that list.

What do you all think? There hasn't been much discussion on the future of the list/BBS. I know Mr. Yount has a strong opinion, where he at? I posted a bunch of long-winded crap here: .

someone oughta check out how the kayaking club does their stuff... i think they have 3 email listserves (i know we are talking about a bboard here and im sticking to that idea, just interested in how uw kayak club deals with membership and access) lots of their stuff is open to the public, but this is a strict members only section. i think this is what you guys are already talking about, but just another example.

just an administrative question. how much work is it for someone to administer access to members? we are going to have to keep tight tabs on processing new memberships and providing that info to the sysadministrator in a timely manner, so that person knows who is in and who is out. while there are <20 members, this probably isnt a big deal, but what are you going to do when this is sucessful and the load is much higher? as much as we need to plan for now and starting this bboard, we need to also think about how this thing grows and is managed into the future

I started looking at the way the UKC does stuff. It kind of looks complicated with those three mailing lists and all. They also have this very rigid way of going about things that stems from their restrictions on who can check out gear and how. That said, if somebody could actually figure out what each list is used for etc. and give the rest of us a summary then that would be great.

Here's how list registration works:
- The new member hears about the club and the board;
- goes to the board and registers;
- and receives an email that explains the account needs to be activated before it can be used;
- meanwhile an account activation request message is sent to the main administration email account;
- the message recipient has to check whether the profile has been filled out correctly, and that the person is actually a member;
- if everything is alrighty then activating the account is simply a matter of clicking on a URL that's included in the account activation request.
- Finally the new member gets an automated notification sent by the bulletin board software.

Since almost all the new members register in early fall quarter I imagine this isn't too much of a problem.

Another possibility is to have the administrator create and activate the accounts using the membership cards that have been filled out when people join. The members get notification email just as before, so this works too.

I don't think the admin's duties will be too much work, especially if there are three admins (Gary, Stebbi, and me) or more.
