Obadiah and I had a bit of time to do some thinking while we were in the Waddington Range. We had been using my Whisperlite for about a week to melt snow while we stayed at the Dragonback Camp. It seemed to take forever to melt snow and boil water for dinner. When we got back to the Plummer Hut, we decided to conduct a series of experiments to investigate the different stove and pot options that we had at our disposal.

Stoves:
= WP Obadiah uses a container that has two holes cut in the side so that the canister can be inverted. This allows the stove to be used in colder environments than suggested by the manufacturer.
= WL

Pots:
MSR 2.0 L pot from the (APS)
(JB) - This pot no longer has the insulating cozy and the handle has been removed.

Method:
Four experiments were conducted with all of the pot-stove permutations. These experiments done on Monday, August 9, 2010 starting around 17:00. The altitude of the test was ~2700 m. To test the stoves, Obadiah collected "isothermal snow from below the crust layer" and compacted it in a Ziplock square bowl to ~600 mL. The stove was lit and allowed to come into equilibrium. The snow was added to the pot, and 200 mL of water (~21 degrees C) was poured on top. The pot was then placed on the stove and covered using the cover that came with the pot. The time was measured from when the pot was placed on the stove until a rolling boil was observed.

Data:

Discussion:
The first thing we noted was in the case of the Windpro (Whisperlite) stove, water came to a boil 41% (39%) faster with the Jetboil pot than with the MSR aluminum pot. The Jetboil pot contains a built in heat exchanger, which clearly decreased the time to boil quite significantly. Secondly, we noted that the Windpro boiled the water 38% faster in the case of the Jetboil pot and 36% faster in the case of the aluminum pot. Clearly the Windpro plus Jetboil pot is the winning combination if you are interested in faster boil times compared to the Whisperlite and/or aluminum pot without a heat exchanger.

Future Work:
This was an interesting experiment to run. Ideally we would have had a scales so we could measure fuel consumption in these two systems. However, despite having access to a helicopter, we did not plan this experiment in advance. We also had limited stove/pot combinations. It would be interesting to conduct further experiments with different stoves and pots. Therefore, I propose we have a club meeting where we all bring in our favorite stove/pot combo. We will measure the time required to boil one liter of water. If we plan in advance, it would be interesting to measure fuel consumption as well.

Jim, sounds like a good meeting idea. First one to boil water gets a cup of hot chocolate? :-)

I only saw this recently, but apparently some top climbers figured out this inverted canister thing a long time ago: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 170095622#

At the very end of the video he pulls a WindPro out of the bag.

Update on stoves: If you're in the market for one, I'd wait until the new jetboil design comes out:

Inverted canister in a convenient package! This thing will be an alpine machine, impervious to cold.

That looks great! I hope they updated the foam sleeve around the pot as well so it doesn't slide down over the hot bits and melt like mine and many others have.
