While we certainly don't get the same number of storms as in the Rockies, most of us who get out a bit have had some experiences with lightning in the mountains. I found this NOLS paper on lightning, which might be of use to folks.

Thanks Brian, this is really good to know. My mom was recently on Shuksan and experienced hair standing on end, tingling sensations, and even heard a picket making a ringing sound. Her party descended immediately and made it out of the storm safely, but things like that definitely increase your awareness of the real potential dangers of lightning.

Obadiah and I recently turned around on Mount Sir Donald due to black storm clouds growing. We reached camp around 1:30 PM and by 2 PM the lightning storm had started. It was quite surprising to talk to several people who continued on through the storm. They seemed awfully cavalier about their belay devices buzzing.

Thanks for the post.

Lightning... naw that can't be dangerous. No 'safety' necessary. Not at all...
(btw, I ran off the peak that my avatar pic comes from)
