Post subject:  Snowshoe Mountaineering Saturday (or Sunday)

Weather pending, I'd like to try the following on either Saturday or Sunday this weekend.

High freezing levels are forecasted to have resulted in a major avalanche cycle today and tomorrow. This should stabilize the snowpack for travel at higher elevations. The heavy rains should also have reduced the low elevation snow pack on some roads.

I'd like to try to head back into the Hurricane/Boulder area again. Last weekend we were stopped by snow below 2000'. If we can get past the Tenas Creek Bridge, I think this would be doable. Note: there is a tree diagonally down across the road that I was able to fit under, but larger cars would not (I drive a Subaru Impreza).

If we find the route is still blocked by snow (or newly fallen timber), the back-up is Prairie Mountain, a bit further up Suiattle River Road and definitely possible to drive within a short walk of the standard jump-off point.

Departure from Seattle would be around 0600.

Required gear:
- beacon
- ice axe
- crampons
- helmet
- snowshoes

(probes, shovels, chain saws optional, but recommended)

We'll be moving at a solid clip and both of these trips involve ~5000' of gain.

I'm interested, but my car is probably too big to drive under the tree.

I'm in and could drive if necessary.

I'm in. Hoping Sunday offers the better weather...
I'd rather not drive the zip car under the trees, so I'll need a ride.

Weather for Saturday is looking quite rainy, so we'll plan to this this trip on Sunday - which is still looking reasonably dry.

Snow levels on Saturday will be back down to 2000'. Might be enough to shut Tenas Creek access down again, or it might not. I would still like to drive up that way first, using Prairie as a fall back, unless the snowfall Saturday is likely to be more than a few inches.

Still plan on an 0600 departure from Seattle.

If anyone has access to a gas-powered chainsaw, that would be helpful for clearing any recent downfall along Tenas Creek or on the far side of Boundary Bridge.

Chain Saw is a go. I'll be ready for the Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell style.

OK, so things look like a go for tomorrow. Weather will deteriorate later in the day, but should be fairly nice for the morning and early afternoon.

We'll be departing from the 65th St P&R (north side) at 0600 on Sunday morning. We have room in the cars for 1-2 more.

Cars and Drivers:

Car #1 (Brian P)
Jeff
Matt

Car #2 (Jim)
Wendy
Craig
Evan

Car #3 (Brian D - I think the outback will fit under the tree - you'll just need to be a bit further to the left than I was - remove roof racks?)
Dylan
Carolina
Chris

Snotel at Stevens shows 2" of fresh early this morning, then nothing else throughout the day. We'll make a go at Hurricane/Boulder, but this will be contingent on being able to drive within 2 miles of the TH (where the road is closed by a slide). If there are a lot of trees down or we're stopped by snow well before this point, then we'll turn our sights towards Prairie Mountain. The key question is whether the rains earlier in the week melted out much of the snowpack around 2000'. The switchbacks on the road are in a valley, so limited sunlight melting (of course there hasn't been much sun to speak of). However, the rains could have also washed out the road, brought down additional trees, or brought down a slide. Cross your fingers/yard and hope.

Post subject:  Re: Snowshoe Mountaineering Saturday (or Sunday)

Can anyone swing by my house (at 49th and Whitman) and pick me up en route to the P&R? Otherwise I'm looking at a 40 minute walk as no other transport available that early on a Sunday. :(

Thanks!
