Dylan and I are teaming up for an assault on Buck Mtn (8500') this coming weekend. Our preferred route approach will be a 2-day trip via Little Giant Pass and Napeequa valley with a bivy/overnight in the Louis Creek basin. We are looking for a fun, strong, and experienced 3rd climber (but we'll be going even if we don't find one). Buck Mtn is class 3, but it is not an easy scramble from any direction. This peak is only visited by an average of 6 parties/year. Two river fords (potentially thigh-deep) will be necessary (Chiwawa and Napeequa rivers). In total, the Napeequa valley route will have over 10,000' of elevation gain (because of going up and over Little Giant Pass). Ice axes, helmets, and possibly crampons will be necessary. Rope and harness can be left at home. We plan to travel light and fast and visit some beautiful country.

If you think you might be interested, please PM or contact either Dylan or me. Thanks!

oh the napeequa valley...good memories. I would love to go, but it is yet to be seen if I can afford the time, with an upcoming Aug. 16 deadline.

Is there a reason you aren't planning on coming in from the Trinity side?

Brian -- For starters, I've already climbed Fortress, so slogging up the Buck Creek Trail isn't nearly as appealing as checking out the Little Giant Pass/Napeequa valley route. I'm definitely not interested in hiking all the way to Buck Creek Pass and then backtracking via High Pass. Schwacking up the west ridge route is a possibility. Eric Johnson also clued us in to a nifty one-day approach via the east ridge (check out this TR):

Dylan and I heavily considered this light-and-fast approach, but both of us are more inclined towards an overnight to enjoy the area if we're going to drive that far out there. Hence the Little Giant Pass route choice.

You shouldn't have to ford the Napeequa on that route (unless you want to go to Clark!) I've hiked that whole portion of the trail (and beyond). It is very nice.

Three of us repeated that one-day route about a month later, but we returned the way we came instead of going over to Berge. Excellent route, some brush but not bad, and the route line on the map in the above link is accurate. Quite reasonable way to day-trip Buck, but was a full day.

Thanks for that info...I'll have to file that away for when I head back there.

Craig, good to know on the Napeequa (no fording required, that is). Then I can just plan on using (and leaving at the ford for my return) an old pair of tennis shoes for the Chiwawa river crossing.

Fantastic choice for a destination. Louis Creek basin is a very unique campsite.

Once you cross Louis Creek, don't try to head directly uphill through slide alder. Continue a little further along and things should thin out. When I did this route several years ago, we pushed directly uphill and discovered (much to our chagrin) that we had managed to maximize our time spent thrashing through slide alder and other routes appeared nearly brush free.

Good luck!
