I'd like to get out to the climbing wall at Magnuson Park Saturday morning to practice some self rescue skills. I have a commitment in the afternoon, so I'm thinking 9 AM -12:30 PM. I'd like to practice belay escapes, tandem rappels, counter-balance rappels, and lowering off a loaded Reverso3 in guide mode. If there's still time, I think it would be worth practicing passing knots, ascending ropes and/or hauling.

Let me know if you're interested.

Fantastic! I've been wanting to do this for a very long time. I guess there is a chance I may be at the ski swap, but I'll plan on coming to this for now.

I'm definitely up for it. Never been to the climbing wall in Magnuson Park, so that should also be interesting...

I'll probably be there, though I might just observe for a bit and then take Picket over to the dog park.

Depending on how skiing plans develop, I may well be there. Anyone wanna do a 1 day BC trip on Sunday?

Sounds like fun to me. Evan - possibly interested for Sunday - depends on weather and avy forecast.

Wow. I was not anticipating this much interest. Glad to see so many folks interested in self rescue. I don't want to deter anyone from coming, but I do want to manage expectations. This is not going to be as organized or well taught as snow school. Several of these systems I have tried only in my apartment and have not practiced them in a more realistic setting (vertical, weighted, and with a squirming patient). Expect there to be down time where I'm looking at the book or trying to figure something out. That said, I'm happy to share what I do know and what I'm learning. I'm excited to try somethings out in a vertical setting.

If you're still interested, bring whatever you own of the following.
harness
helmet
belay device
biners
rope
slings
cordelette
pulleys
prussiks
books that include rescue techniques
rock shoes might not be a bad idea, but are probably unnecessary

Jim, I'll probably show up, too. Evan, if conditions permit, I'd like to go for a one-day ski trip!

OK, so someone asked me for a reference that they could look over before tomorrow.

Check out This is the book I use. You can view most of it via Google Books, but I recommend picking up a copy at some point. It would be worth looking over the rescue overview (p 31), the knots chapter, escaping the belay, and lowering. Hopefully we'll be able to do some belay escapes and lowering. If things go really well, we can try some ascending as well.

I thought I learned all there was to know from The Climb, but apparently I'm mistaken...

I'll try to head over there Saturday, but am not quite sure yet. Thanks for organizing, Jim!
