The plan for Monday, August 17th, will be a hike to the Kendall Catwalk and, hopefully, scramble the peak (if we have time). I plan to take the way trail that cuts off part of the PCT. This will make the trip 9.2 miles and 3050' of gain. We will depart from the U-district at 4:00 pm. If you are interested, please respond to this thread and indicate if you can drive and how many you can take. If it ends up only being a small group (4 people), I can drive.

Yay, I think I will come on this one. I've always wanted to see the Katwalk, and scrambling up the peak would be even better. I'll be able to drive with 3 other people.

I think I've heard of the shortcut you mentioned; at the end of about the 4th long switchback about 4200', you can continue uphill to climber's right off-trail toward pt 5784' at the top of the ridge. This puts you close to the trail again, cutting off ~2 miles and 1500' of gain in favor of short scramble. Also the NW Ridge seems like an interesting way to get up, involves some scrambling on the ridgeline, but there are also more mellow routes on the southwest side with bootpaths.

It just so happened that I found myself at the summit of Kendall Peak on Saturday morning. So now I have the short-cut all figured out. The short-cut that I did uses the commonwealth trail from the parking lot and a little boulder hoping to join the PCT. We'll leave Seattle at 4 pm (as planned) and hit the trail. We should easily make it to the Catwalk in 2.5-3 hours, then we'll head back and scramble the peak via a very easy way trail on the way out. If all goes well, we'll be at the summit of Kendall at sunset. So bring a camera and a headlamp!
