This weekend, I'd like to take a day and do a whirlwind tour of the Enchantments area of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Stunning doesn't begin to describe the area, especially with a dusting of snow, glaze of ice on the tarns, and larch needles in the air. We'll be departing from the Stuart Lake trailhead, heading up to Colchuck Lake, over Asgaard Pass, and then rolling down through the Enchantment Lakes to the Snow Lake trailhead.

The plan would be to head out the evening before the hike, bivy at the trailhead, and then do the thru-hike. This will involve setting up a short car shuttle, which we will probably do the evening of as we get settled in at the parking lot.

This is a very strenuous hike. Approximately 20 miles, with over 5000' of elevation gain. 2000' of this gain comes in 3/4 of a mile up Asgaard Pass. There is a boulder field at the base of Asgaard that requires some fun scrambling (class 2), but the rest of the trip is on trail. I expect there will be some snow, but not enough to serve as a real impediment. I think that I may wear running shoes for the first bit, but then carry and switch to boots for the snowier sections.

I expect that the trip will take ~12 hours to complete, so we'll be getting up around 5:00 the morning of and trying to be moving by about 5:30 am.

Gear:
- enough warm clothes to camp out at the trailhead the night before
- warm layers for the upper Enchantments (highs forecasted in the 40's)
- food and water
- appropriate footwear

Maximum party size for the Alpine Lakes wilderness is 8, so this will be, by necessity, a small group. If more people than 8 want to go, we could operate as two completely separate groups, spacing out our starts by 30 minutes or so. Alternatively, if anyone is super burly, the reverse of our route is possible, though this involves 7500' of gain.

If interested, respond to this thread and indicate:
1. If you have a car (we need at least two to set up the shuttle)
2. Which direction you'd like to go (hard vs. really hard)

If you have questions, post in the thread, send me a PM, send me an email, or ask me at Pub on Wednesday.

-----Update-----

Vast majority interested in Saturday, so we'll head up to on Friday afternoon/evening and do the loop on Saturday.

Weather forecast is sunny and cool - looks like great conditions. We still have room for a few other people if there's interest.

Since I'm handling gear check out on Friday, I don't expect to get out of Seattle until 6:45. Which is probably OK, because traffic will be pretty bad before then. If people want to head out earlier, that's fine. I'll be sending out an email shortly to coordinate. I would like the "hard" and "easy" groups to have enough vehicles to undo their own car shuttles in the case that one group takes significantly longer than the other. I think we have enough cars to do this.

It's snowed lightly in the enchantments the past couple of days. I'd recommend that everyone bring some kind of waterproof footwear for the upper enchantments. The rocks at the base of Asgaard Pass are likely to be particularly slippery.

Everyone should have a headlamp - we'll be in the dark for the beginning of the day and possibly the end.

If you have gaitors, you may want to bring them to keep the snow out of your boots.

Rangers say there is negligible permanent snowpack, so ice axes will not be necessary.

-----Groups-----

Stuart Lake -> Snow Lake (5000+ gain)
Brian Polagye (car w/3)
Brian Wright (car w/4)
Michael Schmitz (car w/?)
Drew Collins
Erik deSilva
Jon Toner - hoping to crag Sunday
Valerie Wall (car w/?)
Jacqui Levy

I'm in! I'd prefer Saturday, that way I can sit on my ass and watch football all day Sunday. I also have a station wagon which will hold 4 plus gear. As of this moment the forecast is great for both days, so I am amenable to Sunday. See you Wednesday.

Shouldn't have said its more gain one way than the other. Now I obviously have to do it that way.

By the way, I'm fine going the "easy" direction.
