The following are a list of links to various sites that may (or may not) be helpful in planning trips. The list is separated between winter/spring trips and summer/fall trips.

If you have suggestions for other links, post below and I'll update them into the master list.

Winter/Spring Trips:

Snow Conditions:

US Avalanche Conditions: http://www.nwac.us/
CN Avalanche Conditions: http://www.avalanche.ca/default.aspx?DN ... ,Documents
Friends of the Northwest Avalanche Center: http://www.avalanchenw.org/info_exchange.html
Avalanche Glossary: http://www.glissemedia.com/aviglossary/

CN Ski Huts and Shelters:

Ski Huts and Shelters in the Coastal Range - http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Huts
Trip Ideas - http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Trip_ideas

Summer/Fall Trips:

Trail conditions:

North Cascades NP - http://www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/t ... itions.htm
Mt. Baker Snoqualmie NF - http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/conditions/ ... ions.shtml
Olympic NP - http://www.nps.gov/archive/olym/wic/conditions.htm
Mt Rainier NP - http://www.nps.gov/archive/mora/trail/tr_cnd.htm
Mt Rainier NP (Mike Gauthier's blog) - http://www.mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com/

Mountain Weather:

NWS: http://www.turns-all-year.com/wealinksfr.html
NWS: http://www.nws.noaa.gov

Text forecasts and precipitation maps for various locations in the Cascades.

Whistler Alpine Forecast: http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/weathe ... /index.htm

Advanced Weather Forecasts: MM5-GFS graphical simulation
http://www.atmos.washington.edu/mm5rt/r ... .12km.html
- 12 km resolution is most useful (scroll down a bit to get to 12 km precip)
- updated twice daily. sometimes it is useful to check out the previous run if the current one is not finished yet.
- forecasts up to 72 hours out, but there 'experimental mm5' that goes out further though reliability decreases with time out.
- The most relavant categories are: Precip (1hr and 3hr), and Clouds (low, med, and high).

Olympic Mountain Webcams: http://www.insideout.com/areawebcams/

Road conditions:

WA Mountain Passes - http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/
BC Highway Cams: http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/bchighwaycam/index.aspx

Note: road conditions are not always updated in a timely manner. Early in the winter, roads closed by snow may be listed as open and later in the spring roads listed as closed may be melted out to higher elevation.

Note: there have been significant road closures due to flooding in 2003 and 2006. Some of these have been repaired, but many traditional access options remain closed.

Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/conditions/ ... port.shtml

Wenatchee National Forest:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/recreate/reports.html

Trip Reports:

Climbing Club at UW: http://uw.cascadeclimbers.com/forum/
UWCC member trip reports. Obviously, the best source for information.

NWHikers: http://www.nwhikers.net
Lots of easier hiking trips, but may have good approach information on roads and trails.

Cascade Climbers: http://www.cascadeclimbers.com
Relatively few trip reports, but some really good stuff amidst the spray.

Turns All Year TR: http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_sn ... /index.php
All things ski and snowboard related.

WTA: http://www.wta.org
Very good trip database for many trails, lakes, and peaks.

Summitpost: http://www.summitpost.org
Great database of peaks and route information built by users.

Hiking Guide to Pacific Northwest and Beyond: http://www.attrition.ws
Slick trail review database for easier hikes in Washington State

Maps:

Hill Map: http://www.hillmap.com/ (side-by-side map comparisons with multiple options)

Acme Mapper: http://mapper.acme.com/ (Google maps with ability to overlay USGS quads)

Libre Maps (USGS Quads): http://libremap.org/, http://duff.geology.washington.edu/data/raster/drg/

Canada Toporama (this information is stretched but still useable) http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/toporama_en.html

Google Earth: Excellent for overviews of different areas - most mountain ranges in the Lower48 and many international locations are rendered into recognizable shapes. You can spot right away what peaks you would see from a particular spot!

UW Map Room is also a great spot to get cheap color photos of topo maps (USA, Canada, Switzerland, etc). Also possibility of checking out USGS quads (best resolution available).

Satellite pictures can help determine if a given cross-country route is going to involve brush, meadow, rock slab, or boulders (which all look the same on most topo maps). http://terraserver.microsoft.com/

NASA World Wind: http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ You can switch back and forth between USGS topo maps and satellite images (around the world) all rendered in 3D.

An excellent Stickypost! I have a few things to add:

Weather Forecasts (advanced): MM5-GFS graphical simulation -
http://www.atmos.washington.edu/mm5rt/r ... .12km.html
- 12 km resolution is most useful.

And of course a comprehensive source of Topo Maps is essential for trip planning!
- Topozone (All USA maps)
http://www.topozone.com
- Canada Toporama (this information is stretched but still useable)
http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/toporama_en.html
- Google Earth: Excellent for overviews of different areas - most mountain ranges in the Lower48 and many international locations are rendered into recognizable shapes. You can spot right away what peaks you would see from a particular spot!

I would also recommend as a map source. Here you can switch back and forth between USGS topo maps and satellite images (around the world) all rendered in 3D. I highly recommend the program.

I just found this impressive compendium of Olympic Peninsula webcams. Could be useful for a live preview of the weather.

For a little extra on regional weather, go to the blog of Cliff Mass (UW Atmospheric Science Prof.). I find his entries really informative and I plan to read his book...

Todd, I've heard him on KUOW a couple times and really like his weekend weather forecasts. I plan on reading his book as well.

I curious what you guys think is the most accurate resource to get the ratings on scrambles. Recently I've done more and more trips where the ratings I've found randomly on the web are confusing me. I know Beckey, and have flipped though it a bit. Should I look at it again?

Post subject:  Re: Trip Planning Tools

I'd think summitpost would be pretty good on ratings. I've found the web good for stuff, typically, if a peak is popular and it's class three you won't have problems. Beckey has it's purpose, and I've found it useful even if a few ratings are off or routes are oversimplified.
