Overview:

  • Weekly team games are coordinated for the Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters.
  • Teams consist of five players from each school. Multiple teams are allowed.
  • Teams are stronlgy encouraged to meet together in a campus computer lab for games. There may be exceptions to this rule that require all team members play together during official ICCL playoff events during the Winter quarter.
  • Games are played mainly on an honor system, with teams self-regulating.
  • No outside help is allowed from opening books, fellow players, or computers. The team captains must ensure that these rules are followed.
  • Other than positive publicity, no prizes will be rewarded. It’s all for fun!
  • All work done is strictly volunteer. No one will profit from this league.

Game Format:

  • A ll official games are held on FICS (freechess.org). There may be special summer events held on non-FICS servers.
  • Colors are decided by the ICCL tournament directors beforehand.
  • Recommended time controls are 60 minutes/game + 5 second increment.
  • Time controls can be shortened for the whole team if both sides agree, but must be reasonable and not blitz. Game length shouldn’t increase.
  • Board order is decided by club team ladder. If none exists, then by USCF rating. However, it is strongly encouraged to have a club ladder to promote competition within the clubs, but it is not required.
  • Ladder position shifts based on team policy.

Tournament Structure:

Fall, 2005

  • a 6-round, Swiss-style tournament will be conducted.
  • Seven rounds are scheduled, with a bye round built in for each team to take during their midterms.
  • Previous pairings, along with same-school pairings, will be avoided and switched by tournament directors.
  • Both teams must report their individual results to the tournament director after the games are played. Full game scores are recommended.

Winter 2005/6

  • Teams will play in 5-7 matches in round-robin and play with most of the other teams within their own region.
  • A bye will be given to each team for midterms. Also, no competitions will take place 2 weeks before or after the US Amateur Championships.
  • The team captains will be responsible for setting up the time of the games.
  • After the round-robin ends within the region, all of the teams can participate in a 4 week ICCL play-off system to determine the official champion of the league.
  • During the ICCL playoffs, the teams must report and play together.
  • Both teams must report their individual results to the tournament director after the games are played. Full game scores are recommended.
  • Detailed Winter League rules are available.

Scheduling:

  • Before the round, team contacts are notified via email who they are playing and their opponent’s contact.
  • Teams are given one work week to complete a round at their convenience. We recommend keeping Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00-10:00pm open.
  • Teams must respect holidays and work through scheduling conflicts.
  • If a date cannot be resolved, the ICCL tournament director must be notified by both parties.
  • The director will try to resolve conflict and has the power to reschedule a match during the make-up week, or forfeit one or both teams.
  • Each team will have the option to opt-out of one round without penalty to accommodate midterms. Directors must be notified at least one week before hand.
  • Any team that is consistently tardy, or does not show up to the events without prior communiction, will be dropped from the league.
  • We will avoid scheduling teams in different time zones.

Eligible Players:

  • While this is mainly for students, we’re just looking to get schools involved.
  • We’ll allow one alumnus per team.
  • One faculty member, coach, or advisor can also occupy a space.
  • Part time students are okay as well

Contacts:

  • All communication from the ICCL to teams will be done through their team captains.
  • Team captains or alternate contacts can be requested if necessary.
  • Communications with the ICCL and tournament directors can take place through email or through online forms. This is available at the Contact Page.
