National Chess Day Tournament (Kickoff tourney)
Saturday Oct. 8
MEB 234, 10am
This will be a 7-round rapid tournament (Game/10min w/o delay). The format will be pre-determined pairings as opposed to swiss, based on those who RSVP by Friday at 11:30am, for the sake of speeding up the tournament (round robin if there are 8 players).
The entry fee is $15 for the first 8 to sign up before the RSVP deadline (Fri 11:30a), or it's $20 on site. If you have won a free tournament, be sure to email me by the deadline or you will have to pay the on-site fee (you still get to keep your credit). 50% of EFs will go into the pot, the other 50 going to buy clocks for the Club. The pot will be distributed as follows:
1st 40% 2nd 25% 3rd 16% 4th 11% 5th 8%
This will be rated using UW's rapid Elo system. Results will be posted to the WCC website by the following morning. This won't be touch-move, but you must declare if you want a draw by insufficient material. If you bring a clock, $3 will be deducted from your entry fee (or $3 credit towards your next tournament if you're using a credit to get in). All other Standard Chess rules apply.
IMPORTANT: If less than 4 players have replied to this email or have signed up online by the RSVP deadline, the tournament will be cancelled. If less than 8 people show up the day of, the rules will be modified (round-robin, num rounds, & prize distribution).

The next regularly-scheduled meeting will be a meeting Monday at 5:30 on 9/26/11. I'm planning to have The first UW tournament on Saturday October 8th, aka National Chess Day , but it's still in the developing stages.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks. --T.O
Pioneer Square Chess Tournament and Updates
The Pioneer Square Chess Tournament, held on Sunday, August 21st, 2011, was a great success, attracting 24 particpants and awarding $88 in prizes (Results available via the Events page).
This tournament will set the stage for more UW tournaments starting in October. Updates to come in late September.
Finals week is over for Summer Quarter. I am not sure whether to cancel Chess Club until Fall, but if I do, Club meetings will resume on Monday September 26th at the usual time (first day of class is Wednesday September 28th). I will send out an email via the emailing list if I decide to cancel.
In the meantime, enjoy your final days of summer!
Summer Quarter Update
Summer Quarter Chess Club is in session, still Mondays at 5:30.
This summer we are looking to attract regular members for leadership positions in the fall. You will see filers posted around campus. I will only give leadership positions to those who attend the most Chess Club meetings, so don't hesitate to drop by! The ladder page will keep track of our most loyal members.
Also stay tuned for the Pioneer Square Chess Championship Tournament, going down August 21st, 2011. Details will be up by Friday.
Don't forget to sign up for our emailing list for weekly updates if you haven't already done so!
Lastly, we have a Dawg Daze event pending confirmation. I'm sure this will attract many new members, but I will need people to staff it. Email me if you're interested!
Spring quarter, 2011 Update:
I know it's been a long time since this Club has been an RSO, and I apologize for any inconveniences. Chess Club virtually dissintegrated at the end of Autumn quarter 2010, but is now making a comeback, thanks to new leadership. My name is Travis Olson, your new president. If you have any questions, contact me at ufoundT@comcast.net. In the meantime, I encourage you all to sign up for the emailing list--the medium through which all important Chess Club info is passed-- by simply clicking this link, or by sending me your email address (name optional). We are now meeting on Mondays at 5:30pm in Mechanical Engineering Building 234. If for some reason the room is locked or full, the rule is that we meet in the next open room moving counterclockwise around the hall.
*Autumn quarter, 2010 Update*:
This fall, we are meeting in room 234 in the Mechanical Engineering building on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00pm. We're always welcoming new players, so if you're interested, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
The club is very easy going, so come whenever you want and play whichever variant you prefer. We usually have people playing blitz and standard games, but if you like speed chess, or bughouse (siamese), we often play those too. Also, make sure to sign up to our mailing list to receive the most timely notifications and updates. Beginners and Grandmasters alike are wanted. Your ability doesn't matter; the only requirement is that you like to play chess. It's free, and has no commitment, so please stop on by.
* If there are scheduling problems, our alternative room will be MEB 245 or 250.
UW places 3rd in College Chess League Team Championship
Earlier this winter, the UW team placed third behind the two Udiv (University of Texas) teams. This is an especially great accomplishment considering UW was, at best, the 6th seed. Check out the CCL's website to see the final standings.
