Sure, the University of Washington may be famous for science and tech research, but there is a good helping of right-brained energy on campus as well. Here are a few of the highlights:

English Undergraduate Association: For English majors, by English majors, the EUA sponsors events like readings, book drives, and trips to the theatre. The organization’s goal is to establish a sense of community and enhance the undergraduate academic program. Ask an advisor for more information.

Castalia: The reading series of the grad students in the Creative Writing Program, held nearly weekly in the Parrington Commons. Check out their website for some visually-enhanced poetry and fiction samples.

interSections: An annual journal sponsored by the Comparative History of Ideas (CHID) Program, produced by CHID undergrads and emphasizing—what else?—ideas. The website has complete archives of the print publication.

Carve/Fiction Writers’ Association: Founded last year by English undergraduate Melvin Sterne, Carve is published by the Fiction Writers’ Association at the University of Washington. Carve is an online magazine of fiction.

Modern Language Quarterly: A journal of literary history edited by Marshall Brown, professor of English and Comparative Literature. “It is devoted to understanding texts of the recent and distant past as the representations, agents, and vehicles of change, in their own day and in their afterlives.”

Seattle Review: A literary journal (poetry, fiction, essays, creative nonfiction, interviews, dialogues, theatre and visual arts) published at UW since 1978. Edited by Colleen McElroy, professor of English.

Poetry Northwest: The oldest magazine in the country to feature poetry alone, Poetry Northwest has been published at UW since 1960, and is currently edited by the English Department’s David Wagoner.

Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Readings: An annual event in honor of faculty member Theodore Roethke (1908 - 1963), cosponsored by the Department of English, UW Graduate School, and the Theodore Roethke Memorial Fund Committee. The readings feature notable contemporary poets, and generally occur each year around May 25, Roethke’s birthday.

Henry Art Gallery: A gallery of modern and contemporary art located by the bridge spanning over 15th and Campus Parkway. Its exhibitions range from UW MFA graduates to artists like Maya Lin and James Turrell.
