In July, BIG went to visit Stern & Faye printers in Sedro-Woolley,
Washington (about an hour and a half north of Seattle.) We were graciously
hosted by owners Jules Remedios Faye and Chris Stern, who
currently teach letterpress classes at Cornish, among their many other projects.
We had a lovely tour, a wonderful chat, a picnic lunch on the porch and
fresh cherries for dessert -- great trip! Chris and Jules own one of
the few working Linotype operations left in the country, which is a
process of casting type to order. Hopefully we will get the chance to visit
them again in the future. Stern & Faye, Grey Spider Press (mostly Chris) and
Street of Crocodiles Press (Jules) produce fine letterpress printing
both as job letterpress and as fine editions of books. You can see their
