Announcements (January 10, 2009):
Man engineers proteins IN HIS GARAGE!

We have a very special speaker for our Winter quarter kickoff meeting...
Rob Carlson has a very unique view of what bioengineering should be. He earned a PhD from Princeton University in 1997 and later wound up doing research at the UW. Several years ago, he got irked that the UW owned patents on technology he developed, so he left and started a biotech company based out of his Fremont garage.
This was the beginning of a quest to make the field more open and accessible to anyone, regardless of whether or not they have millions of dollars of startup funding. Dr. Carlson has managed to put together low cost technologies that allow him to do cutting edge research without an expensive lab, and hopes that his work will serve as a model and enable others to do the same. In fact, he was able to replicate some of his research with novel methods -- in his garage -- and apply for a new patent. :)
Dr. Carlson is amazing person, and I can't wait to hear him speak about his adventures in entrepreneurship and research. Oh, and there will be pizza and pop, as always, so come hungry!
