Jaeger, J. M., and C. A. Nittrouer. 1999. Sediment deposition in an Alaskan Fjord: Controls on the formation and preservation of sedimentary structures in Icy Bay. Journal Of Sedimentary Research 69: 1011-1026. The purpose of this study was to observe and document sedimentation within the temperate fjord, Icy Bay, Alaska. Both physical and biological processes were documented. It was also the hope of this study that spatial trends in the sedimentary structures may tell of marine sedimentation during glacial-interglacial transitions. This paper is relevant to my topic because I too plan on looking at sedimentation within a fjord with a receding glacier. Also multiple techniques were used to analyze the sediment: box core, kasten core, piston core, Pb-210 activity, Th-234 activity and grain size analysis. Each methods relevance and usefulness was explained in this paper making it a good starting point for my research techniques. Koppes, M. N., and B. Hallet. 2002. Influence of rapid glacial retreat on the rate of erosion by tidewater glaciers. Geology 30: 47-50. The purpose of this paper was to test a numerical model of proglacial sedimentation. The model was used to look at the relationship of varying sediment output, glacial retreat rate, general glacial dynamics and how both short and long term erosion rates are present in a stratigraphic record. Conclusions from this paper were that the current erosion rate at Muir Glacier were five times that of the long-term rate and the retreat rate curve has similar curves to the rate of erosion curve. This paper is relevant to my research in that it studied Muir Glacier in Glacier Bay, Alaska. I will not however be using this numerical modeling for my research. The background information of the Glacier Bay region given in this paper should be helpful to my research. The articles are related in that they both involve sedimentation and erosion in Alaskan glacial fjords. The Jaeger and Nittrouer paper is more in the direction of the type of research I plan on doing, while the Koppes and Hallet paper was conducted in my region of interest. I chose these papers since they are both either related to my topic of region of interest. |
