My research will attempt to establish the chronology of the maximum glacier extents in Mongolia and Siberia. This information will give the better understanding of the ice-age climate change fluctuations within Asia.

Where can I get this information?

DEM and Index map showing Darhad Basin and adjecent areas

Darhad basin is a tectonically active extensional subsidence feature at the west end of the Baikal Rift in Siberia. This basin was filled with water during the ice-age due to damming of the only drainage from the basin, Little Yenisei, by the glaciers. Paleolake sediments, remnants of moraines, fluvial deposits in downstream of drainage will give a clue to understand when did maximum glacier extents happened during the ice age.

What are the possibilities to collect such information?

1. Dating of the moraines in the basin.

2. Dating of the paleolake sediments.

3. Dating of outburst flood deposits left behind retreating of the glaciers.

4. Dating of outwash terraces along Tengis valley (that hosted biggest glacier-dam)
