The Black Embodiments Studio
Winter 2018 - Winter 2019

The Simpson Center for the Humanities, University of Washington

The Black Embodiments Studio is a writing incubator and lecture series that examines Black expression in the arts. Participation is not limited to arts students. Rather, a large cross-section of working arts professionals through non-arts students participate in the fellowship. During bi-weekly meetings with Professor Kemi Adeyemi, we discuss our weekly Black exhibition visits to develop our arts writing and criticism skills. We also have opportunities to meet with visiting artists, scholars, and curators to discuss works directly with the creators.

2017-2018

The Simpson Center for the Humanities, University of Washington

Hanauer Fellows will participate in a bi-monthly seminar led by Galya Diment, Joff Hanauer Distinguished Professor for Western Civilization. The goals of the program are to foster creative and critical work in the Western cultural tradition and to help prepare teachers from different disciplines who have well-reasoned convictions about the place of Western civilization in the curriculum of an American liberal arts institution.

Department of Geography Howard Martin Research Grant
Spring 2017 Cycle

University of Washington

The Department of Geography distributes modest research support for graduate students each year from funds dedicated to the memory of Howard Martin, who was a long-time Professor and founding Chair (1935-50). These funds are used to support research by Geography graduate students that can be meaningfully advanced with small amounts (around $1500) of assistance. Please note that you can only receive Howard Martin funds only once per degree (i.e. once during your MA, and once in your PhD). Funds must be claimed no later than one year after they are awarded. Awards will be decided by the Graduate Committee, subject to the Chair’s approval, and the availability of funds.
