  • Saturday, April 11: AWRA Mountain Snowpack Exploration Trip

Have you ever wondered how forecasters assess avalanche danger? Have you thought about how scientists make manual measurements of the amount of water in snowpack? Want to get away from the dry and sunny days that Seattle has been having lately to catch a last glimpse of winter?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then this Saturday's AWRA Mountain Snowpack Exploration Trip is for you!! Come learn about the operations of the NW Avalanche Center near Alpental, where you will learn about how avalanches form, how snowpits are dug and analyzed, and the tests the NWAC does to forecast avalanche danger. We also plan on taking snow course measurements, which are used to determine water amount in snowpack. Just when you thought the day couldn't get better, we will then go exploring around snowshoe trails near Snoqualmie Pass and have some fun in the snow!
