[PDF file]
Pending approval/corrections at next APC meeting:
Attendees: Spencer Lamm, Tammy Salmon, Michelle Vallance, Melinda (Mindy) Snarr, Deborah Lee Bosket, Rose McLendon, Woods Fairbanks, Janet Polata, Carolyn Dunford, Linda Wagner
- Approved Minutes from the January 30, 2006 meeting.
- 2/27 Seattle Municipal Archives Tour review: organizer Carolyn Dunford reported that the 15 spots allotted for the tour filled up very quickly. The tour was first offered to LIS 505 students and then posted on the APC listserv. No further publicity was needed. Due to the event’s success, it was recommended that the tour be offered again, perhaps more toward the beginning of the quarter that LIS 505 is offered.
- Spring quarter events in the works:
- Sandra Kroupa Distance Residency Talk — Apr 6-8 (Week 2) Janet Polata reported that she emailed Sandra Kroupa an invitation to speak during the Spring quarter distance residency. The afternoon of Friday, April 7, is likely the best time to hold the event since Thursday is filled with core course meetings. Potential topics include focusing on work by book artists keyed to the geographical area of the distance students (Portland, Olympia, etc.), a general history of the book, and a general history of print. If Sandra Kroupa is not available, another option is scheduling a Municipal Archives tour.
- Urban Archives Talk — April 3-7 or April 10-14 (Week 2 or 3) or even Week 4
- Jimerson/Nelson Talk — April 10-14 or so Rose McLendon emailed Randall Jimerson regarding a visit to the UW campus to talk about Western Washington University’s archives certificate program. She also contacted Sarah Nelson, who is finishing up her thesis and prefers to schedule the talk sometime during Spring quarter. While the application deadline for the certificate program is April 1, the talk would be valuable for those in the first year of graduate school and for distance students.
- KEXP/Gibb/Seman Digital Audio Archiving Panel — April 24-28 or May 1-5 (Week 5 or 6) Spencer Lamm reported that KEXP’s Don Yates recommended contacting Jack Walters. Spencer will see if a representative from KEXP is available on Tuesday, April 25, or Tuesday, May 2, at 3:30 pm. Tuesdays from 3:30 pm onward look to be the best scheduling option for Spring quarter.
- Samuel Brylawski Sound Archiving Talk — May 16 Jeff Teitelbaum is scouting locations. MGH is preferred as it may pull the best attendance. Jeff requested the event be recorded. Rose McLendon mentioned that Michael Smith is giving a workshop on podcasting in early Spring quarter. If Rose or others are not able to attend, we may approach Leilani Johnson about training (Leilani provided training for the iCareer Week recordings).
- A query from SALA President Erin Ostrander about a potential social event during the Distance residency: “SALA was thinking of trying to promote something social during residency, on Friday, April 7th. Any other groups want to do this, too? Can we make this a joint venture?” It was agreed that joining in on this social event would be a nice gesture and a good opportunity to introduce more distance students to the glories of APC. Linda will respond to Erin.
- Elections: 2/15 email from Erin Ostrander: “SALA was looking at the last week or two in April for elections—it’s after portfolios are in and would give May for transition time. Other groups want to coordinate again? I'd love to get feedback about your interest so that we know if we are solo-ing or trying to work together. I know it’s a ways off, but we should think about some sort of open meeting to talk about being an officer in the different groups as well as figure out how we want to split things up.”
It was agreed that partnering with other groups for a joint ballot was a good idea. Carolyn will forward the position descriptions she outlined earlier this year to the current officers. Positions available are:- Co-chair (existing position)
- Co-chair (existing position)
- Secretary (new position)
- Marketing/Community Liaison (combining the somewhat nebulously-titled “community liaison” position with a marketing position
- Webmaster (existing position)
- Distance Liaison (new position in terms of elections)
- Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 3, at 11:00 am in MGH 310D.
