[PDF file]

Pending approval/corrections at next APC meeting:

Attendees: Carolyn Dunford, Laurel Evans, Woods Fairbanks, Spencer Lamm, Rose McLendon, Janet Polata, Melinda Snarr, Jeff Teitelbaum, Michelle Vallance, Linda Wagner

  1. Approved Minutes from the January 9, 2006 meeting.

  2. Rose Mclendon spoke about her internship experience last summer at the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott, Arizona.

  3. APC iCareer Week Panel: It was agreed that our panel was a great success and had excellent attendance (20 people). Carolyn will link the video and any photographs for this event from the APC site.

  4. Upcoming Event: Jeff Teitelbaum spoke about organizing a talk by Samuel Brylawski, the former head of the Library of Congress' Recorded Sound Division, and an active speaker and writer about the issues of digital preservation. Brylawski is attending the upcoming ARSC Conference in May (see item E). Jeff has secured a budget from GPSS requested that APC help coordinate this event in the following areas:
    • Poster: Discussed coordinating with iArts to create and produce this poster. There is a budget of $100.
    • Room: Discussed potential venues in MGH and Suzzallo. Budget of approximately $250. Linda Wagner noted that the UW does not allow room reservations until 2 weeks after the quarter has started, but given the timing of this talk, there should be plenty of time to reserve a room.
    • Equipment: Discussion of what special equipment might be needed.
    • Transportation: arrangements and costs need to be taken care of.

  5. Upcoming Event: Woods Fairbanks discussed the upcoming Association for Recorded Sound Collections Conference (ARSC). A pre-conference workshop, A Tutorial on the Preservation of Audio in the Digital Domain, will be held on Wednesday, May 17th. This pre-conference workshop is sponsored by ARSC, the ARSC Education and Training Committee, and the University of Washington Libraries.

He noted that several students have volunteered for this conference and that more volunteers are welcome. Woods noted Laurel Sercombe’s continued appeal for any interested ARSC volunteers to email her at julius AT u.washington.edu in order to attend the next planning meeting.

  6. APC Election in Spring: Discussed the possibility of having APC elections early enough to allow for some overlap. This overlap would allow outgoing APC officers to provide some orientation to the new APC officers.

  7. Website Update: Carolyn Dunford has made the following updates to the APC website:
    • a page for the APC Constitution that is linked from the About Us page
    • added Janet Polata as our Acting Distance Liaison to the About Us page
    • added meeting minutes for Nov. 7th, 28th, and Jan. 9th

  8. Future Event Planning:
    • Janet Polata (Acting Distance Liaison) noted that there was a great deal of interest in having Sandra Kroupa give a presentation to coincide with the next MLIS Distance Residency, April 6-8, 2006. It was agreed that Sandra’s past events have had excellent attendance, and that Janet should approach Sandra Kroupa about giving a talk on April 6th or 7th.

    • Carolyn Dunford noted that there was great interest on the part of LIS 505 students in a tour of the City of Seattle Municipal Archives (SMA). Scott Cline (SMA Archivist and LIS 505 instructor) had hoped to have students meet at the City Archives during class time, but the scheduling of a core class prior to LIS 505 makes this impractical. Alternative times were discussed and Carolyn agreed to contact Scott to work out some possible meeting times. The possibility of having two tour dates from which to choose was also discussed.

    • Discussion about an APC sound archives panel preceding the ARSC conference featuring a representative from KEXP, John Gibbs from UW's music library, and John Seman. Spencer Lamm will approach KEXP. Linda will approach John Gibbs and John Seman in mid-February.

    • Rose Mclendon is following up on possible talks by Sarah Nelson, Archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration and Rand Jimerson, past president of SAA and Director of Western Washington University’s Archives and Records Management Program.

    • Linda Wagner will follow-up with Tom Dobrowolsky about giving a talk on the Urban Archives Database sometime during February 21-24th.

  9. Next meeting: February 27, 2006 at 4pm, Mary Gates Hall 191A.
