[PDF file]
Pending approval/corrections at next APC meeting:
Attendees: Abby Bass, Carolyn Dunford, Woods Fairbanks, Maya Foo, Julia Gray, Laura, Rose McLendon, Tammy Salman, Lorraine Thomas, Michelle Vallance, Linda Wagner
- Approved Minutes from the October 3, 2005 meeting.
- Woods Fairbanks presented his experiences working in UW Special Collections, namely on the Yukon collections and more recently on a film preservation project.
- Laurel Sercombe, Archivist in UW’s Ethnomusicology Department, gave an overview of her department and of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) and their upcoming national conference in Seattle from May 17-20, 2006. While the Northwest does not have a dedicated ARSC chapter and while sound archives are not especially robust in this region, a number of excellent collections exist.
- Laurel invited those interested in volunteering for the ARSC conference to an introductory meeting scheduled for October 18 at 7 pm. She hoped students would be able to use their volunteer experience for credit. Carolyn mentioned first-year MLIS students may be able to receive independent study credit. All agreed that volunteering for the conference or in the ethnomusicology department would be a good portfolio experience.
- Laurel will be teaching an introductory course in sound archiving in Spring 2006 through UW’s Ethnomusicology Department. It will likely be a 400- or 500-level course.
- Laurel hopes that the research role of sound archives will become more prevalent.
- Laurel mentioned an organization devoted to Pacific Northwest languages archives, Breath of Life, as an excellent opportunity for service work.
- Review of October 13 talk by Lorraine McConaghy: while attendance was sparse, it was agreed that the content of the talk and the dynamism and enthusiasm of the speaker were rare treats for those who attended.
- Future Event: Movie Afternoon/Night
- This is tentatively scheduled for November 10. Linda and Woods will check into getting a room. Grace suggested MGH 420.
- Lorraine offered to bring movies from her family for viewing.
- Future Event: Modern Book Arts with Sandra Kroupa
- Sandra was open to speak on a number of subjects. Meeting attendees were most interested in modern book arts.
- The event is scheduled for Friday, November 18 at 2:00 pm in the UW Maps/Special Collections Classroom.
- Future Event: Brainstorming about panelists for iCareer Week (January 2006)
- A diverse selection of panelists is preferred. Panelists could be thought of in terms of specialty (academic, government, corporate, cultural/historical, private, medical) or in terms of format (sound, film, image, etc.).
- Linda suggested that a panelist working in the multicultural/international realm would add depth to the panel. Woods suggested getting a panelist from the Densho Digital Archive. Another option would be a panelist from the Wing Luke.
- Julia will make inquiries at Safeco for a corporate archives panelist.
- One attendee suggested that panelists should include an iSchool alum who currently works in the field. Woods will research this because it relates to queries he is making for his ALISS position.
- Tammy suggested KEXP as an excellent example of state-of-the-art digital archiving.
- Getty or Corbis could fill the “image” slot. Linda will inquire after we have a firmer date.
- Tammy volunteers at NARA, and will inquire there about interest. She will [send] email to the APC address (archpres@u.washington.edu).
- Woods will make some inqueries regarding film.
- Linda will contact DJ Miller regarding the exact dates of iCareer Week.
- Community Liaison activities: (Rose)
- Rose has contacted UW departments and dormitories about posting APC notices. She will also find out about listservs in campus departments.
- Rose sent a notice to the dMLIS listserv about the creation of an APC distance liaison. We will discuss responses at the November 7 meeting.
- Funding: Linda will forward a draft budget to the officers. Woods will seek funding for at least the next few events from ALISS. The GPSS fund is another option since it’s expressly for covering costs like flyer production, honoraria, travel, etc.
- Next meeting: November 7, 2005 at 4pm, MGH 310D.
- Secretary: Linda Wagner
