October 20, 2003 — Meeting Minutes
- Noella proposed that we form some sort of sub-groups or committees so that one or two people aren't doing all the work for all the events.
- So first we discussed what events we might want to have this term, so
that people could be on the committees for them.
- A tour, either of the mendery and MSCUA, or of the whole library (Suzzallo, Allen?)
- An EAD presentation (I think that's Encoded Archival Description?)
- Possibly a show & tell with some of the rare books in the library's collection?
- Tabling (probably next Wednesday; email from Shannon forthcoming) and other publicity
- The preservation exhibit that's up in Suzzallo right now, and having the person who set it up come speak to us?
- Then people said some things they want to do:
- Tour: Noella, John (or Jon? I don't remember), Deb, Nic?
- EAD: Shan, Nic, Joshua
- Show & tell: Lauren is talking to Sandra, the Rare Books person at MSCUA, to see what is the least busy time of year for her, since she co-teaches some iSchool classes
- Publicity/outreach: Lauren, Stacy.
- Preservation exhibit: ends October 31st. Go look at it!
Obviously these committees are still open; if you're interested in any of these things, email Noella (noelln@u.washington.edu) and she will pass your name onto the other people in the committee.
Another thing we are thinking about for the future: Bookbinding thingy -- someone will eventually be in charge of contacting SALA and finding out about how they did this last year; this will probably be timed to match up with daytime 508, which is in the spring. - SAA: Do we want to join? If you think of it, look over their website (archivists.org) and particularly this page and think about the possible pros and cons of becoming a student chapter. John is doing some in-depth research about it so you won't be in trouble if you don't, but it wouldn't hurt if everyone looked at it. Things to think about: Do we need an advisor? Who would our advisor be? What expectations would we have of that person, and is there anyone on campus (since the University Archivist is leaving) who can provide those things for us? And what about dues?
- Next meeting: Tuesday November 4 at 4:30pm. Location TBA.
