Join Dr. Lorraine McConaghy for a presentation of her research on the 1855-56 visit to Seattle of the U.S. Navy sloop-of-war DECATUR. Supported by a Hooper Fellowship from the Naval Historical Center, McConaghy spent this summer in Washington, D.C. steeped in the documents at the National Archives and Records Administration and the Navy Department Library. There—in the rich collection of squadron correspondence, ship’s logbooks, medical logs, journals, and punishment records—she encountered a fascinating new narrative of encounters between the ship’s crew and Seattle’s settlers and native people.
Winner of the 2005 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Lorraine McConaghy is a celebrated historian whose research interests include the study of family and community in the Pacific Northwest. She received her doctorate at the University of Washington in 1993 and is currently the senior historian at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry. An author of numerous books and articles, McConaghy is active in many national professional organizations, including the American Historical Association and the Urban History Association, as well as in regional and local heritage organizations, including the Northwest Oral History Association and the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild. - APC General Meeting, October 17, 2005

In the past few years, historical recordings, sound archives, and audio preservation have received unprecedented support and interest from Congress, endowments, and private foundations. In 2007, the Library of Congress will open its National Audio Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia. Both the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities have recently funded historical audio projects.
Sam Brylawski, editor of the University of California Santa Barbara Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Recordings, and former head of the Library of Congress Recorded Sound Section, will present an overview of many promising developments in audio archiving, offer his view of what the future holds for audio archives in the United States, and point out some the existing impediments to ensuring the preservation of our audio heritage and wide access to the hundreds of thousands of historical recordings held by public archives.
Samuel Brylawski is the former head of the Library of Congress' Recorded Sound Division, and an active speaker and writer about the issues of digital preservation. He is currently the First Vice-President/President Elect of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC).
