Academic Preparation for an Archives or Preservation Job
Within the Information School
The iSchool offers a few important classes pertaining to Archives and Preservation, including:
LIS 505 Archival and Manuscript Services (3 credits) Selection, organization, and uses of archival and manuscript collections. Emphasis on the principles and techniques; some attention to the administration of state archival and historical institutions' collections. Lecture, demonstration, and laboratory.

LIS 507 Preservation and Conservation of Library Materials (3 credits) Consideration of the many factors contributing to the physical vulnerability of library materials of all kinds and an overview of resources and strategies for those who determine preservation policy or manage the application of such policy. No technical background necessary.

LIS 508 History of Recorded Information (4 credits) Exploration of the history and ongoing transformation of recorded information within three broad spheres of human life: public communication, administrative and commercial operation, and personal communication.

LIS 588 Special Librarianship (3 credits) Seminar in the practice of special librarianship in business and industrial firms, government agencies, and the free-lance sector. User services and information resources. Credit/no credit only. Prerequisite: LIS 580 (or special permission).
The iSchool occasionally offers special electives that relate to the field, as do other UW programs, such as Urban Design and Planning's class on Historic Preservation (UrbDP 586A).

Other Programs
Western Washington University offers a Certificate in Archive and Records Management completed either in combination with two-year MA in History or as a post-graduate certificate. Dr. Rand Jimerson, the current President of the Society of American Archivists (SAA), is the Director of the program.
