The Big Move!

As everybody knows by now, we're moving! Our 'new' space is in the old Electrical Engineering department digs -- we'll have 50% more room than here in good ole Suzzallo. That sounds pretty good, until you realize all the 'extra' space was already 'spoken for' way back in September when the new faculty and expanded resources were being decided on. Mike E assures us that the Mary Gates Hall space we're heading for in a couple of years will be half-as-big again, and "it's right across the way from Suzzallo." The new digs are almost ready for us ... check out the floorplan. If you're in town over interim, please consider helping the student organizations get ready for the move. All the lounge furniture, the Oval Closet contents, etc. are student property!

New Faculty Joining SLIS!

MAURICE GREEN -- BS Computer Information Systems, DeVry Institute of Technology (1991); MS Computer Science/ Information Systems, Marist College (1993). PhD Information Science, State University of New York University at Albany (199X). Dissertation: Chief Information Officers in New York State Agencies.

JOE JANES -- MLS, PhD, Syracuse University. Founding Director of the Internet Public Library (IPL) at the School of Information of the University of Michigan. Co-author of six books on teaching, online information retrieval, and the Internet, including The Internet Searcher's Handbook and the forthcoming Internet Public Library Handbook. He has taught at the University of Michigan, UNC-Chapel Hill, SUNY-Albany and Syracuse. He plays tennis and racquetball ("mediocre"), bridge ("even more mediocre"), enjoys reading and movies, especially appalling science fiction films of the 50s and 60s ("think Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"). He also thinks that the character of "Giles" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the single best thing to happen to the image of librarianship in about 40 years. Check out his March 1998 interview on the IPL.

From the Alumni Folks

The Annual (G)SLIS Alumni Dinner was a rousing success, attended by over 70 graduates and current students. The 1998 Distinguished Alumna, Liisa Fagerlund, received her award and spoke on some of her interesting career adventures: working at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, touring a peacekeeping operation in South Lebanon as a U.N. archivist, and her return to her native Pacific Northwest, where she is now home in Portland, Oregon. SLIS Director Mike Eisenberg exhorted the crowd in a H-U-S-K-I-E-S cheer and shared some of the exciting changes that are going on in the program. Other special guests included former Director Phyllis Van Orden, last year's Acting Director Betty Bengtson, and Dr. Nelson. The 1998-1999 Alumni officers were confirmed by the attending members. They are: President Elena Bianco (1996, ebianco@ctc.ctc.edu), President-Elect Zoe Holbrooks (1998, zoeholbr@drizzle.com), Past President Lorrie Kovell (1994, lkovell@timberland.lib.wa.us), Secretary Bill Gembala (1996, gembala@u.washington.edu), Noted for the Alumni Editor Erica Shaefer, Webmaster Alex Wade (awade@u.washington.edu),

Dana B's Conference Report

Would you like your degree to say "Masters in Literoscience?" I attended the Conference on the History and Heritage of Science Information Systems in late October 1998 on fellowship from the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and discovered that a recent prominent Japanese Library Director wanted to call LIS 'Literoscience.' Other notes from the conference:

I also attended the first day of ASIS and got to see Terry lead a group of "docunaughts" through a discussion of his paper.
