Dana B's Conference Report
Would you like your degree to say "Masters in Literoscience?" I attended
the Conference on the History and Heritage of Science Information Systems in
late October 1998 on fellowship from the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and
discovered that a recent prominent Japanese Library Director wanted to
call LIS 'Literoscience.' Other notes from the conference:
- I met several other LIS students from across the U.S., and none of
those students were happy with their programs. Several programs had just
finished going through major curriculum changes.
- Many other LIS PhD students are very excited about the faculty
positions here. We could have many good candidates from which to choose.
- I learned of several international efforts in LIS, most notably
VINITI,
the All-Russian training ground for librarians from the developing
world.
- It was amazing to hear of the impact of federal money on information
systems across the United States. A national report to be released in
February tallies up the Departments of Energy and Defense's money that
helped to build everything from early network systems to Netscape and IE.
- A PhD candidate referred to the clasic movie Desk
Set as evidence of a war between documentalists and librarians. A
grad student from Tennessee told me that she had to watch that movie in
class.
I also attended the first day of ASIS and got to see Terry lead a group of
"docunaughts" through a discussion of his paper.
