                        Chris Amante

                        Blair Austin

                        Darci Chapman

                        Meredith Selfon

                        Karen Estlund

      1. Book Sale. The dates for the Book Sale are: February 16-17, 2005.

Chris expressed concern that previous book sales closed too early and that evening students were unable to attend.

Karen stated that Book Sale tradition allows students who help set up the sale to have first dibs on books. Since the set-up occurs in the evening after By George is closed, evening students who are interested in buying books can come during the set-up time.

Darci reminded everyone that the first weekend after January 1st is the DMLIS Winter Residency and that distance folks who want to donate books can do so then.

Blair stated that collections will start in January.

Blair will write a schedule of tasks to do, develop a time frame and a rough estimate on the number of volunteers needed.

  1. Chris requested that Nancy’s Faculty Advising Guidelines (for faculty) be posted on the ALISS web site for students to see. This document has information that would be useful to students. Dave suggested that ALISS link to this document. Karen said that since the document is simply a set of guidelines, posting them would create expectations among students that may not be met. Chris suggested that we post Jenn Carter’s document on the site.

  2. Darci reported that most DMLIS students are on vacation.

  3. Karen passed out a Silverfish Policy document.  Karen synthesized notes from Katy and Chris’s research of other student publications. In addition, Karen reported that she has found the old Silverfish papers (then The Sojourner) from the closet and that they need to be archived. This is a possible portfolio project.

  4. Karen: We have 300 mugs. The distance students are enjoying them.

  5. Karen: there is a large box of 20-30 T-shirts and sweatshirts in the closet that need to be donated to people in need. Chris suggested donating them to the Millionaire Club, a day laborer company. Chris mentioned further that there are companies that make rags out of fabric. Dave suggested leaving them at Union Gospel Mission. Blair suggested donating them to Value Village or Good Will, but other officers preferred that they not be given to a company that would sell them. Meredith suggested the YMCA. Chris volunteered to investigate this further.
  6. Karen: Fall Mixer. October 12, 2004 at 5:00 in MGH 420. Dave thought it would be fun to meet the students after their 500 class and walk them to MGH 420, to the Fall Mixer.

  7. Karen: Orientation: Returning distance student Fall Residency Social, September 25, 6:20-7:30, Saturday, in MGH 420. Darci mentioned that this event would be a way to reach out to the current DMLIS students. Tea and cookies will be served. The purpose of the meeting is to allow students to meet the ALISS representatives and vice versa. Dave suggested that we should talk to the other student groups about this event and work to make sure that each group has a member in attendance to answer students’ questions.

  8. Karen: September 27: MLIS All Program All Day Event. This is the main social event in MGH for new students. We will have a table session there.

  9. Dave suggested we plan out our next meetings today. Dave and Karen advocated meeting on consistent days and times in order to avoid scheduling conflicts. Darci will host on-line meetings for Distance and Evening students who cannot attend the Open Meetings. There is also Dave’s Forum. Here are the Open Meeting dates and times (all Open Meetings are in the iSalon), followed by the date for the first Executive Meeting (Executive Meeting will be in Roosevelt Commons):

                                                              i.      Open Meeting # 1: Tuesday, November 2, 3:30 PM

ii.      Open Meeting #2: Tuesday, December 7, 3:30 PM

iii.      Executive Meeting: Sunday, November, 7, 10 AM (Roos. Commons)

  1. Meredith handed out a tentative budget for the 2004-2005 Session. Meredith reported on the ALISS budget. Since this budget is tentative, it will not be reported here. The final budget will appear in We have many supplies currently on hand. Supplies include cups, napkins and snack foods.

  2. Karen: Could ALISS buy a server? Dave said that Scott S. would put the server in the server room but that the iSchool would not support the server. It would be ALISS’s responsibility. Dave suggested that a single computer would work as a server. Having a controlled system (i.e., off-Dante) would be easier to maintain and use. Chris wondered whether an ALISS server would need to meet UW or iSchool requirements. Dave pointed out that UW servers are auto-updated and security updated but that an ALISS server would not be. Darci, Dave and Karen advocated caution in pursuing this and advocated further investigation.

  3. Dave suggested the construction of an official iSchool forum. Such a forum would have less noise than iChat and could be organized by date and subject to serve students more effectively.

  4. Darci has digital photos that were pulled from the new web site. Dave advocated more photos. Darci will put any ALISS photos in the Past Events section of the website. Darci questioned whether or not it is legal to post photos on the website. It was agreed that posting them should not be a problem.

  5. Chris mentioned that we don’t currently have a faculty advisor and wondered whether or not we have to have one in order to be a legitimate student group. Blair volunteered to check with the SAO office.

  6. Speakers: Dave advocated that Alex Wade, former Engineering Librarian and current program manager at Microsoft, come to give a talk. Other possible speakers include someone from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, SPL, KCLS, etc. Karen recommended co-sponsorship with other student groups. Dave will work to get the leaders of the other student organizations together to plan events. Karen pointed out that we can have speakers talk about stress, time management.
    1. Dave will talk to Alex
