Open Discussion
1. Forum on Future of LIS Education (All): We discussed possible questions for the upcoming Forum on LIS Education. The discussion turned to issues of technology, and how the technology curriculum can apply to working in a library environment. It was acknowledged that technology will become more and more prominent in a public library setting, and it is imperative to know something about it. We agreed that the Forum would provide a wonderful opportunity for a "reality check" from professionals.
2. ALISS Elections (Kristin): Kristin announced the schedule for ALISS Elections, with first announcement to solicit candidates February 12, elections occuring week 8 (February 20-23), and the elected officers announced week 9 (February 26). The elected officers would then be able to attend the scheduled Executive Meetings on February 28 and March 14. Folks were encouraged to be on the lookout for potential candidates. It was also mentioned that the first big task of the new crew is to plan the Spring Fling at the end of spring quarter.
3. Student Lounge Help (All): We briefly discussed Student Lounge amenities, mostly wall coverings, including getting GPSS funds for this project. Lisa mentioned Pam Green's email message that stated that this request to GPSS has to be fairly specific. This may be something for our student lounge volunteer, who is still to be determined. Holly stated that ASIS&T folks are looking into acquiring IS/IT related posters, including something from XeroxPARC. We joked about tapestries, bean bags and lava lamps. David offered that he might be able to bring in some plants We agreed that the hardier the plant the better for survival in the iSalon..
4. Volunteers for Committees (Kristin): Kristin announced that several students had volunteered for the open jobs, including ALISS Web Deity, Alumni Association representative, and Evening Degree representative. The web deity position will probably be job-shared by John Buell and Joanna Freeman. Teresa McCausland will serve as the evening degree representative. Ilene Jaffe will serve on the Alumni Association as the current student representative. Still open are the DISC liaison (Disabled, International and Students of Color), and the iSalon coordinators. It was noted that iSalon coordinators will not be responsible for cleaning up after fellow students, but will be in charge of coordinating the acquisition of decor, publications and kitchen supplies.
5. Booksale Update (Lisa): Lisa briefly updated the group on the Booksale. Donations will be accepted officially until Friday, February 2, although people may still bring offerings by the 4th floor conference room during the weekend Categorization Party on February 3 and 4, or at any time until the end of the first day of the sale, February 7. Several students volunteered for helping to categorize items and staff the sale. Holes in the sales schedule will be filled closer to the sale dates.
6. Open Discussion (All): The conversation then became open, and covered various topics. Among these was the issue of technology, and the involvement of the first-year students in defining competencies. The importance of keeping track of what was being learned and what new skills could help the program was noted. The efforts of Nancy Honhorst and Suzan Parker were noted, and Holly indicated that ASIS&T was very interested in coordiating these efforts. The next ASIS&T meeting would be dedicated to pursuing the technology question in more detail, and would be a great follow-up onto the Forum on LIS Education.
Susan also mentioned the graduate student conference being planned by University of British Columbia students, and also thought that a discussion on conference-attending, perhaps scheduled to prepare for ALA in San Francisco, would be of benefit to students.
Meeting was adjourned at
12:55pm.
Respectfully submitted,
