Discussion:

1. Approval of Minutes (Lisa):  The first item of business was the approval of the minutes from the open meeting of June 22.

2. Academic Librarianship Brown Bags (Lisa):  Lisa reported on developments of meetings between students and UW Librarians after talking briefly with Joyce Ogburn, Associate Director of Resources and Collection Management Services, about plans to schedule brown bag lunches.  Ms. Ogburn mentioned that something was already in the works for July 28, organized by Matt Turpin and other ISchool Students (8:30-10:00 in Suzzallo/Allen Tower Room), but that she would be glad to be involved with subsequent meetings, perhaps one per quarter.  Lisa will follow up to organize a fall meeting.

3. Alumni Association Picnic (all): The officers assessed who would be able to attend the July 22 Alumni Association picnic.  It was ascertained that due to work conflicts, Jen would be the only one available to represent ALISS, and that we would be able to provide the soft drinks left from the Spring Fling, and supplies for the barbecue.  It was noted that ALISS's largesse would be constrained due to low funds.  Jen said she would email Zoe Holbrooks regarding our offerings and attendance, and Lisa said she would make sure that enough promotional flyers were posted.

4. Student Organization Office Move (Lisa):  With the move to Mary Gates quickly upon us, a time was scheduled to make sure that the student organization office was adequately packed in terms of ALISS materials.  It was decided that the officers would commit to the time following the July 26th Open Meeting to finish this.

5. ALA Chicago Conference Debriefing (Lisa):  Lisa proposed an informational session for fall quarter to talk about her conference experience at ALA and to show the many materials that she brought back with her.  She mentioned that Tanya Allison and Stephen Conroy were there to represent ISchool students and that they might want to participate.  It was suggested that this would be a good opportunity for ALISS/SALA co-sponsorship.  Lisa offered to email Diane Rosolowsky about SALA's involvement in co-planning.  Widening the scope of the session to address conferences in general was also mentioned, possibly including faculty and UW librarians on the panel as well.  The session could be announced in the upcoming Silverfish issue.

6. Technology Mentoring: Jennifer's Meeting with Carmen Goldsmith:  Jen discussed her meeting with Carmen Goldsmith about "Making Connections," a UW Women's Center program to mentor to grade school and junior high girls in the fields of science, math and technology.  Jen mentioned that this could be a great portfolio opportunity for ISchool students, in the categories of service and teaching.  She noted that two students in particular were excited about the opportunity to create campus-wide partnerships and increase the School's visibility among various communities.  As an aside, it was also mentioned that more could be done in the way of minority recruitment.  A question came up regarding the status of ALA's Spectrum Initiative and our involvement in that.  It was noted that SALA folks may know more about this.  In terms of the ALISS purview, DISC could be kickstarted for the 2000-01 academic year, along with the recruitment of representatives on all of the committees.

7. Silverfish (Kristin):  Kristin said that there were no firm contributions for Silverfish following her email announcement.  Lisa confirmed her contribution of an article about ALA Chicago.  The officers then brainstormed for articles including: Anne Turner's fieldwork with Elizabeth Liddy, introductions and events contributions from the other student organizations, a calendar of events, etc.  Kristin also noted that she would welcome help in editing the newsletter.

8: Tidbits - Website, Fall Picnic, Fall Orientation (all): It was mentioned that one of the topics for the next Executive Meeting will be the ALISS website, to be redesigned by Pam Green.  Electronic bulletin boards and calendars will also be considered.  Andy noted that he was still trying to reach people at Woodland Park to reserve space for the Fall Picnic in October.  Kristin spoke regarding Fall Orientation, and mentioned that Jenny Steward and Grace Whiteaker would be willing to assist ALISS with its role in orientation.

Respectfully submitted,
Lisa Spagnolo
ALISS Secretary
