Agenda:
1. Welcome
2. Officers' Reports
3. Orientation Debriefing
4. Convocation Debriefing
5. Fundraising Options
6. Open Discussion

Discussion:

1. Welcome (K. Dermody): Kristin, as presiding officer, opened the meeting and welcomed our visiting student, Susan Ludington, who will be starting in Fall Quarter.  Kristin explained how the student organization is configured and the opportunity for serving on committees.

2. Officers' Reports (A. Bates, L. Spagnolo, K. Dermody):  Andy reported that we were still afloat financially, with bills for water service paid for.  Lisa reported that a budget spreadsheet (Excel) for Spring Fling was created in the ALISS folder on the G drive.  Lisa and Andy will complete this for next year's planning.  Officers who have receipts of expenditures are encouraged to enter them in the spreadsheet.  Kristin noted that she will be soliciting Silverfish contributions for the first issue since 1998.  She will also be seeking an additional editor for the project.  Kristin also reported that Jen is working on the mentoring program to encourage young women to enter technology fields.  This will be a volunteer opportunity for our students to become mentors.

3. Orientation Debriefing (all): Those present at the summer orientation on June 16 (Kristin, Lisa, Betsy, and Pam), noted that it went very well.  Planning for fall orientation was discussed, including a social event, campus tours (led by student officers last year), and a more organized beer outing.  It was noted by some that one was "on one's own" in terms of getting from school to the location of the beer gathering, and that more guidance might be provided for this year.

4. Convocation Debriefing (all): The officers shared discussion from the student leaders meeting with Mike regarding convocation.  Students were encouraged to think of whom they might want next year for keynote speaker, student speakers, or faculty speakers.  Off-campus speakers were preferred to faculty speakers.  The Lipstick Librarian (Linda Absher) was mentioned as a possibility.  It was noted of this year's convocation that some of Corinne Campbell's remarks went over the heads of the families--it was difficult to balance addressing graduates and addressing the audience at large.

5. Fundraising Options (all): Grace updated us on her valiant fundraising efforts for Spring Fling.  She noted that much of the correspondence was forward to ALISS for its records.  Too short of a time frame was given to have companies contribute something for the Spring Fling; in cases in which internships were mentioned as a partnership possibility, the company contact was forwarded to Lynnea.  Grace noted that it was important to follow up with these people so that they can include us in their next budget and that it was important to stress how our graduates fit in to the activities of the company.  Pam suggested that instead of just asking for money that we present an annual plan of what we spend our money on.  Related to fundraising, it was mentioned that we still have some soon-to-be-vintage SLIS-wear that could be sold at a discount; in addition, the group was excited to get merchandise with the new ISchool logo (T-shirts, notecards for thank-yous, etc.).

6. Open Discussion: At this point the floor was opened to other topics not covered by the agenda.  The dearth of one-credit classes in the fall was lamented.  It was suggested that perhaps Mike could cover the Big-6 in a 1-day course.  The rest of the meeting was spent offering tips to Susan for finding housing, for getting involved in organizations (GPSS, other student organizations, etc.), and for contacting faculty and students with similar interests.

Respectfully submitted,
Lisa Spagnolo
ALISS Secretary
