ALISS MEETING MINTUES

ALISS Meeting Minutes
May 8, 1998
Secretary Melissa Riesland out ill.
Betty Bengtson in attendance.
Elections: Since exactly one candidate volunteered for each of the
offices of Secretary (Debbie Chavez), Treasurer (Patti Stroschein), and
GPSS Senator (Sayumi Irey), it was moved and voted to accept them as the
new officers effective July 1. This in accordance with the revised
by-laws. There were no candidates for the office of President. [Sarah
"Sam" Webb has volunteered to serve as Acting President until elections
can be held in the Fall. Unanimously approved via email.]
Finances: ALISS has $2900 in the bank, some is already allotted to
various projects ($300 for slipcovers, gift funds for departing faculty
members, Convocation, etc.). We confirmed $100 donation to Darlene
Nordyke's 'get well' fund. (Melissa is contact for Darlene's fund.)
Convocation: We had budgeted $1200-1500 for this event, hoping for
the lower figure. Food expenses are expected to range between $750-850.
The honorarium to Deborah Jacobs is $300. The Alumni Association has
traditionally donated money for flowers for the event, but they are a bit
short on funds this year. Certificates will be done with the generosity
(time and resources!) of the UW Libraries. We are encouraging first year
students and alumni to attend Convocation.
Farewell Event: The Alumni Association is organizing the party for Drs.
Hiatt, Doll and Oh. They have asked us for $250. It will be held in the
Peterson Room in the Allen Library on June 11. Details on the ALISS
homepage.
Class/Departmental Photo: Stephanie Schmidt (sdschmid@u) is coordinating
this effort and doing a great job; University Photography (campus unit)
will provide photographer/equipment. It's scheduled for Saturday at 8:30a
on the front steps of Suzzallo. Anyone who wants a print will have to
prepay $5 for it. This will lose money if at least 100 people don't show
up, but it is a good project and it's the first time GSLIS has done it
since the 1970s.
Academic Computing Center: The ACC will cease operation in June as a
student facility (it's being converted to equipment and instruction only).
Fall Quarter, OUGL will be open 24 hours a day M-F only. Betty Bengtson
commented that the UW Libraries hadn't originally intended to have library
staff outside normal hours for that facility, but they will probably hire
2 library folks for the overnight shift.
Student Handbook: Needs updating/reworking; Stephanie Mattox volunteered
to lead. The suggestion was made that we put it up on the ALISS webpage
to make it more accessible and easier to update.
Student Mentoring: Some discussion of the need for and possibility of
establishing some sort of informal mentoring. This continues to be an
issue -- every year people express a need for peer and professional
mentors, and people express a willingness to serve in those roles. We
haven't figured out how to make it happen on a regular basis, though.
DISC Report: The Spring Quarter potluck will be Saturday at Raya Fidel's.
They will have dim sum the Saturday after Convocation for those who are
still in town.
Admissions Report: Sharwain reported 128 students have been offered
admission. A wait list has been established; if space becomes available,
those on the wait list will be contacted.
End-of-Quarter/End-of-Year Party: Bonnie Parks (bonster@u) volunteered to
organize it after the quarter is over.
SALA: SALA will host the first event of Summer Quarter (Friday Happy
Hour). Their new tee-shirts will be available in the next week or so,
$12. The ever popular (and all new) Top 10 Reasons to Go to Library
School; good color -- the same purple as the Official Departmental GSLIS
Student Information Packets.
ASIS: ASIS will present their Curriculum Revision Proposal to the faculty
in June; they are working on the final draft now. They have new officers.
The new folks will host a mid-summer picnic. (Contact Fred Brown or Brian
DeBroux for more information.)
SLA: They have new officers and will be updating their website over the
summer.
Apologies for lateness! :S
