- SNACKS
: According to the Treasurer, there are $90 in
overdue snack IOUs. Please remember that providing snacks is in
an experimental phase at the moment, they will only continue to be
provided if they pay for themselves.
- BOOKSALE
: Thanks to everyone who participated, donated
books, bought books, worked on sorting, pricing, selling, packing,
and moving books! You ARE appreciated! The sales haven’t been
completely counted up yet, so stay tuned for that info.
- CONVOCATION
: The Convocation Committee is gathering
steam, but there is still time to get involved! Results of the
Convocation Survey are:
- Speaker
: In order of preference, Deborah
Jacobs, SPL; Nancy Pearl, SPL; Bill Gates, Gates Library
Foundation/Microsoft, led the field of speaker nominations.
- Student Speaker
: Overwhelmingly, students wanted
a student speaker with Ken Thompson and the Ruth Worden Award
winner (selected by faculty and Alumni Association) getting
about equal votes.
- Tickets
: Three-quarters of students responding
preferred to buy tickets for themselves; ticket price
preferences were about evenly distributed from $5-$10, with
a slight skew towards keeping them at $5.
- Day of Event
: In order of preference, majority
chose Friday Evening, Sunday Day, or Saturday Morning
off-campus. We do have a room in the HUB reserved for next
year’s Friday Evening Convocation ceremony.
- Lounge Project
: The slipcovers have been completed.
They are of sturdy fabric and can be removed for dry cleaning.
Going forward, we will be working with the GSLIS Alumni
Association to get some historical memorabilia for hanging on
the walls.
- Quarterly Party
: A "beginning of the
quarter" party and a "midterms" party have
been suggested as alternatives to the "end of the
quarter" party. Particularly during Spring Quarter,
the traditional "end of the quarter" party tends
to get scrunched between Convocation, several faculty-student
events, and private parties. We need your input – if you
want a party this quarter, what would you prefer? Beginning
(next week), Midterms (before or after?), or End of Quarter?
Are you willing to work on putting it together?
- ALISS Elections
: If the Constitution/Bylaws are
approved, Nominations will be accepted for ALISS offices
beginning April 17. The sign-up sheet is on the ALISS
bulletin board. Voting will take place on May 1 to give
incoming officers a chance to attend meetings and
"apprentice" with the outgoing officers before
assuming their offices in July.
- Student Handbook
: The Student Handbook is in need
of revision. ?Stephanie Mattox? has volunteered to take the
lead in this project. Please contact her to volunteer.
- Summer Orientation
: Summer Orientation is a great
opportunity to introduce the comparatively few new students to
GSLIS in the relative calm of summer. Ideally, orientation
includes (in addition to the Official Stuff from the Department)
a guided tour of the campus, "insider scoop" on
useful/neat stuff that you would have wanted to know as a
newbie, etc. Please consider volunteering when the opportunity
arises (and it will!).
- Scholarships
: Several scholarships (for example,
the Microsoft Scholarship) are deadlining VERY SOON. If you
are continuing on at GSLIS, please consider applying for them.
There have been years when scholarship monies went unspent
because nobody bothered to apply!!! What a waste!
- ASIS
: Darlene Weber will announce activities
(elections, etc.).
- SALA
: Dana Bostrom will announce activities
(projects, etc.).
- SLA
: Greg Fleming will discuss elections,
activities, etc.
- American Society of Indexers Conference
: There may be
reduced/free registrations in exchange for working the conference;
Efthimis is pursuing; keep an eye on uwash.gslis for more
information as it becomes available.
- ASUW Jobs
: Announcements being posted in uwash.gslis.jobs
- Center for Career Services
is a campus resource that is
too good to be passed up if you are serious about job-hunting. They
have workshops, job leads, on-campus interview schedules, etc. Take
the time to visit their shop (301 Loew Hall) or their webpage (
weber.u.washington.edu/~careers/) for more info.
- UW Commencement
: Several people who responded to the
Convocation Survey seemed confused about buying tickets to the GSLIS
event, stating that the University should pay for it. The UW’s
OFFICIAL ceremony is Commencement. It is completely separate and
unrelated to GSLIS Convocation. Departmental ceremonies are not
required by the UW and are held solely at the discretion and whim of
departments and their members. For information on the Official UW
Commencement, access Official Information Sources, like the GSLIS
Office or the Graduate School Office. For accoutrements (caps, gowns,
etc.) see the University Bookstore. For other stuff (announcements,
rings, souvenirs, etc.) see the University Bookstore, the Dawghouse,
etc. Be aware that UW Commencement will be held in Husky Stadium,
come rain or shine; parking will be restricted and you will need to
rent a cap & gown to obtain ONE approved day-only ticket for
reserved parking on campus.
