ALISS Minutes - 2/23/98
ALISS Meeting Minutes
Monday, Feb. 23, 1998
Present: Zoe Holbrooks, Lorena O'English, Stephanie Mattox, Brian Bannon,
Hioni Karamanos, Sarah Higgins, Melissa Riesland.
**Notes in quotation marks are taken from Zoe Holbrook's agenda handed out
at the meeting.
- Old Business:
- Thank you note from Delores Potter for ALISS's contribution to Cancer
Society in memory of her mother. Note is posted in Student Lounge by
phone.
- Silverfish (Brian Bannon):
- Silverfish deadline is Friday, Feb. 27. Brian would like to put an
edition out by the end of the quarter.
- Zoe reminded everyone that it's good to submit reports to Silverfish
because it builds name familiarity with the other students.
- Brian will post deadline reminder in SUZ 127.
- Zoe is trying to get proposed bylaws revisions ready for posting in
this Silverfish.
- Brian's e-mail is bbannon@u.
- ALISS Web Site (Meg Wood):
- Meg was not present, but Zoe reminded everyone to send updates to Meg
so the web site is kept current.
- Meg's e-mail is whabap@u.
- Slipcovers (Zoe):
- "The cost estimate for the slipcovers (fabric and labor) is under
$300. The contractor will be coming to campus to do them within the next
month and a half -- we're doing the schedule shuffling thing now."
- Oval Closet (Zoe):
- Closet needs to be cleaned out for Spring Book Sale storage. Melissa
said she would contact student-group leaders about cleaning up the space.
- Opportunity Fair (Zoe):
- Zoe reported that the mailing list is currently around 500, could go
as high as 600 invitees. Zoe expects a 10-percent response rate, which
means around 60 prospective employers. Zoe is looking for a space that can
hold at least 100.
- "We need to pick a date, and establish a preliminary budget. Suggested
dates (all Fridays): April 17, April 24, May 1. The mailing (postage, etc)
looks like just under $200 unless the Office will let us mail out on their
budget number and reimburse them (will be less if so). We need 2 rooms in
the HUB: 1 large room for tables/booths, and 1 smaller room for exhibitors
to take breaks and meet one-on-one with students to make appointments for
interviews or take resumes. We need coffee/beverage service in the morning
and afternoon (this is a day-long event; attendees can get their own food
in the HUB facilities, but coffee/beverages is considered absolute basic
necessity in such events). Ken Thompson suggested we ask for donations
from students who attend ($1-$2). If we advertise to Technical
Communications and the Education folks, we should recoup a couple of
hundred dollars (assuming everyone is willing to donate $1-$2 to meet
local employers). This is a chance to peddle GSLIS tees, mugs, etc.
(fundraising!)."
- Director Candidates:
- Zoe reported that student sessions are being attended by about 1 dozen
students, not the same ones each time. This is considered successful,
especially since good questions are asked.
- "Eisenberg and Klavans have been here. About a dozen students have
attended the HUB 204N Q&A sessions. Schatz has been postponed due to
illness. John King, hired as a consultant to the Director Search
Committee, has decided to become a candidate. His vita will be in the
GSLIS office this week, per email."
- Secretary's Report (Melissa Riesland):
- Zoe moved and Hioni seconded spending up to $75 dollars for a
reusable, indoor/outdoor vinyl banner for book sale.
- Melissa reported that three people have volunteered for the planning
committee: Laura Tanji, Sharwain Smith, and David Wright.
- Melissa said the committee will be polling faculty and students for
donations. Also seek donations from University District bookstores.
- Melissa reported that SALA has volunteered to man tables during the
sale.
- Treasurer's Report:
- Tina Kay was not present.
- Admissions Report: (Sharwain Smith)
- Sharwain Smith was not present, but reports that everything is going
fine. "Rumor is that this year's applicants are exceptional. There will be
a new crop of 1st years next year."
- Alumni Report: (Christa Bindel)
- Christa Bindel was not present, but sent news that the Winter Desert
Soiree was a great success. "Many new faculty and about 40 alumni attended
in addition to GSLIS students".
- "Project Network: May 8, 6:30 p at the Waterfront Activities Center --
mentoring and networking for 1st and 2nd year GSLIS students."
- "Convocation: Neither Christa nor Judith will be attending. Betty
Bengston has called for a committee meeting this week. The only nomination
for a Convocation speaker so far is Deborah Jacobs, new SPL Director.
Feedback has been sparse. Need volunteers for planning/etc. the event."
- Christa sent in the following report via e-mail: 2/12/98 Winter
Dessert
Soiree was a great success! Kudos to the students who attended, any
opportunity to meet peers and faculty on a informal basis can be a lot of
fun as well as enriching! Many new faculty attended and about 40 Alumni.
- Get ready for Project Network! We won't put up flyers until nest
quarter, but mark your calendars! This is an incredible mentoring and
networking opportunity for both 2nd and 1st year students. May 8th, 6:30
pm at the Waterfront Activities Center.
- Convocation needs help! Zoe and I are meeting with Judith and Betty
sometime this week, hopefully. The major candidate for guest speaker is
Deborah Jacobs, SPL Director. There haven't really been any nominations
for a student speaker and support does not appear to be strong for one. We
haven't been getting a whole lot of feedback, so please put out feelers in
your class groups, etc. We need students to help with the actual event!
1st years or 2nd years not interested in ceremony. Neither Judith or I
will be in town and Zoe gets to be done with us so please get a hold of me
if you or someone you know can help out. Thank You!
- Colloquia Report: (Sarah Higgins)
- Sarah Higgins said the survey has overwhelmingly come out in favor of
evening colloquia. About 20 responses have been received (10-percent of
student body).
- Need a room for evening colloquia. Zoe suggested Allen Auditorium.
- Curriculum Report: (Laura McCarty)
- Laura McCarty was not present, but Zoe reported that Laura will be
meeting this week with Evening Degree Rep. Brian DeBroux to discuss
concerns regarding class cancellations, classes, etc. Evening students are
very unhappy with this past quarter. Complaints have included poor access
to the computer lab and poor class selection.
- Access to computer lab is problem for all student for Winter Quarter,
said Sarah. Zoe reported that Scott Schramke is working to get Dialog
installed on every machine in the lab. Also, Scott will be meeting with
faculty regarding problems like having students download software and lab
managers not being prepared for assignments.
- Also complaints that hours are too short. Zoe said this is a problem
of
not enough staff.
- To register complaints, Zoe said to email your advisor and the
instructor that you can't get access to labs. This makes the prof in
charge and the official channels aware of problems. Zoe said also to
remember other labs are available on campus for general needs, like
Academic Computing Center on Brooklyn, which is underused.
- Curriculum Committee is conducting a survey about Fall '98 schedule.
This is your opportunity to voice concerns about class offerings.
- Zoe said complaints about cancelled classes should be directed toward
your advisor with a cc: to Betty. Ask your advisor about
outside-department substitutions. Zoe said IS530 can be substituted for
LIS 513, which was cancelled.
- DISC: (Laura Tanji)
- Laura Tanji was not present, but sent her report:
- "Cross-cultural communications training (free!) is available if enough
people are interested. Information is on uwash.gslis and on the DISC
bulletin board. Please contact Laura Tanji (ltanji@u) if you would like to
participate."
- "DISC Winter Quarter Potluck will be this coming Saturday at Raya
Fidel's."
- Evening Degree: (Brian DeBroux)
- Brian DeBroux was not present, but sent news that "Students are
concerned about the availability of the lab for their projects, the
quality of evening instruction this quarter, the cancellation of classes,
and the scheduling of the Master's Exam next quarter. As it happens, those
students taking Saturday classes have effectively 1 less day to complete
the Exam (which is picked up on Friday and turned in the following Monday
before noon). Laura [McCarty] is getting involved. [Zoe] has emailed Betty
Bengston to start the ball rolling re: the Master's Exam issue."
- GPSS:
- Stephanie said there's no new news to report. The Tech Fee was
approved
to continue at $40 per quarter.
- Stephanie added the following report via e-mail: Here are a few
additions as to what GPSS did at their last GPSS meeting on Feb. 11th:
Each of us wrote at least 2 letters to WA legislature concerning senate
bills dealing with childcare and matching state funds. The resolution to
renew the student technology fee passed. The resolution to support the
first phase of Suzzalo Library passed--unamended!!!! Baseline option for
IMA expansion support passed. (There was concern that the IMA renovation
costs would exceed what students were actually requesting --so this no
frills option was proposed.)
- ASIS:
- Zoe reported that ASIS made money on their raffle.
- The IS/IT Project will survey Information Systems programs nationwide
at
peer institutions. The proposal is for an IS track in the US GSLIS
program.
- Darlene Weber submitted her report via e-mail: ASIS is currently
working
on curriculum review for recommendations to the curriculum committee. In
addition, we will be recommending a director candidate. Let's see. We
earned $325 with our raffle. Toni Emerson has asked for any input on
Student Night. You can forward remarks to me & I will pass them along.
- SALA:
- Lorena O'English reported that the new officers are Dana Bostrom,
Chair;
Lorena, Vice Chair; and Susi Swis, Secretary.
- The group is looking to get card-carrying members active.
- Projects include: cleaning out Oval Closet, volunteer for Spring Books
Sale, baseball night at Mariner's in April or May, and Librarians' Night
at the Movies once a month with popcorn.
- Sarah Hunt won the ALA Conference Raffle for free tuition to the
conference.
- SALA will meet Tuesday, Feb. 24.
- SLA:
- Zoe reported that student night was highly successfully. About 60
students and 60 professionals. Most feedback has been positive.
- SLA is planning fieldtrips to Microsoft, Library for the Blind,
Zymogenetics, and more.
- Student Handbook:
- Zoe said this needs to be revised for Summer 1998. Volunteers should
contact Zoe. Stephanie said she'd like to work on the project.
Next Meeting: Monday, March 9, 1998, 3:30 p.m. in Student Study Room.
