AASU Announces APIA Leadership Conference on UW Campus
University of Washington, Seattle – The Asian American
Student Union at University of Washington is an Asian American campus
student organization working with civil rights, political, and social
issues. This year, we are proud to host the APIA University: Leadership
101 training conference on the UW Seattle campus. The event will take
place on the weekend of April 12-13, from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday
and from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Sunday.
This conference is conducted by the Organization of Chinese Americans
(OCA) - a national civil rights advocacy and educational organization
with over 80 chapters and affiliates nationwide, and is financially
sponsored by the State Farm Insurance Companies. State Farm is funding
this training conference for the fourth consecutive year. A spokesperson
from State Farm said, “It’s very important that our future
generations have the tools to be catalysts for change and activism.
Asian Pacific American students, with their unique ethnical identity
and cultural backgrounds, are potential leaders.”
OCA hopes to develop regional bonds among students and campuses as
well as Asian Pacific American leaders on college campuses across
the country. In each training conference, 60 students will be selected
to participate in this day and a half training. In order to achieve
the goals of the training conferences, 2 facilitators are guiding
groups of students through hands-on exercises, presentations and discussions
building comprehension of the concepts.
For those Asian and Pacific American students interested in leadership
development, civil responsibility, involvement with APA student organizations,
and networking with other APA student activists, this conference is
a great opportunity. The training is absolutely free for college students
but space is limited. A $15 deposit is required to hold secure registration;
checks will be returned at the end of the training. Breakfast, lunch
and a night reception are provided by OCA; however, students are responsible
for their own transportation and accommodations.
